Turanga Leela is one of the most important employees of Planet Express. She occupies the position of the ship's captain and pilot and therefore is the head of the regular delivery crew consisting of herself, Fry, and Bender. She is known as the most competent of the three main characters.

Personality and abilities
During her youth, Leela was often teased because she only had one eye. She felt very lonely in her childhood after being abandoned by her parents at an orphanarium, and always dreamed of learning who her real parents were. She eventually learns that she is a mutant, rather than an alien, which she had always thought she was. Leela has been shown to care a great deal about her mutant parents, even stealing a priceless Quantum Gemerald from a museum along with Bender and Fry, when the Zookeeper threatens to feed them to piranhas.

Despite her troubled past, Leela is friendly, smart and self-reliant, though she is sometimes impatient and quick to anger. She cares deeply for her friends and loved ones, plus issues she feels she must stand up for, like freedom, the environment and cute animals. However she does not hesitate to use force if she believes the situation demands it. She also has a liking for violence and was often sarcastic, but she nevertheless seems to have developed strong maternal instincts at times. She is engaged in a constant low-intensity feud with Amy Wong, the only other female at Planet Express, who more or less frequently accuses her of not being ladylike enough to be a true woman, despite Leela having a strong sensitivity for cuteness and romantic issues.

Leela lives alone in a somewhat underfurnished apartment (Apartment 1i) somewhere in the city of New New York. She only shares her loneliness with her alien pet, Nibbler.

As a mutant, Leela has a peculiar metabolism different from that of standard humans. Mutagens cannot harm her, and she seems resistant to many poisons, environmental hazards and illnesses. Her special condition may have helped her fight off the threat by the Baby Space Bee Queen's poison, and it proved instrumental for finding the cure against the common cold that had New New York in its clutches. Also, it might explain why Leela is so fond of sports and so well-muscled. As a recruit of the Earth forces, she surpassed every other recruit on the training ground, even well-trained males, and has shown extraordinary strength, dexterity and stamina on numerous occasions.

Leela is also highly skilled in martial arts which has been shown on numerous occasions.

She is also shown to be obsessive at times, and in Möbius Dick, this reached a critical level when she began displaying symptoms of multiple personality disorder as a result of the futile efforts of attempting kill a Four-dimensional space whale that devoured their latest delivery.

Biography
Early years
Turanga Leela was born as the only child of a married couple of mutants in the sewers of New New York. Her parents are Turanga Morris and Munda. As Leela is probably the least mutated mutant ever born (as described to her parents by a medical professional), and looked like a normal child except for her one eye, her parents decided that she should not share the fate of her people living in the sewers. They instead chose to give her a life as normal as possible - a "real" life - by giving her up to the Cookieville Minimum Security Orphanarium, though it was a tough decision and they suffered greatly by giving her away. Attached to the basket she was found in was a note in an alien language written by her mother Turanga Munda, who has a Ph.D. in exolinguistics. She meant for the note to convince the finder of her daughter that she was an alien and thus accept her into the orphanarium. The plan worked, and Leela was taken in by the head of the orphanarium, Warden Vogel.

Leela grew up in the orphanarium unaware of her true roots, believing that she was indeed an alien. She had a hard time there, as she was relentlessly picked on because of her unusual appearance, and was always a lonely outsider. As a child she wore a monocle and, later, braces. Nevertheless, or maybe because of this, she managed to develop a strong and caring personality. As an outlet for her deep frustration, she trained in Arcturan Kung Fu to the level of a black-belt by a master of this martial art, Fnog, despite being a victim of his obvious sexism.

Hired at Planet Express
Season 1
After leaving the orphanarium, she began a career as Fate Assignment Officer at Applied Cryogenics, assigning defrostees to their permanent careers and providing them with the proper career chips. Then one day a defrostee named Philip J. Fry came along and inspired her to quit her job. Ultimately, she ended up being hired by Fry's many-times-great-nephew Hubert Farnsworth as the new captain for his interstellar delivery service, Planet Express. In that position, she acquired her beloved pet Nibbler, after saving him from the implosion of Vergon 6. She also rescued Fry from the Trisolians, attempted to destroy the giant ball of garbage, escaped from the Titanic and helped save the world from the Omicronians in the First Omicronian Invasion of Earth in the same year that she was hired.

Another Cyclops
Season 2
From going on the Internet, Leela believed to have found another cyclops, and would finally find out her true home planet. The cyclops turned out to be Alcazar, who took her to Cyclopia, where she supposedly was born. Leela decides that she must marry Al to continue their species. When Al tried to marry Leela, however, it turns out that Al was really a shape-shifting grasshopper, who was going to marry four other women of different alien races. She leaves the planet disappointed, but hopeful.

That same year, she almost lost Nibbler to El Chupanibre, but he was saved by Bender, after Leela learned to be selfish. She was briefly named Miss Universe at the Miss Universe Pageant 3001 by Zapp Brannigan by accident. She discovered Popplers but was almost killed by Lrrr when the crew found out that Popplers were the Omicronians' young. She also served in the DOOP Army in The Battle of Spheron 1.

Helping the Nibblonians
Season 3
After having her pet Nibbler named "Dumbest Pet in Show" at a pet competition, Leela is shocked to learn that Nibbler is actually a high-ranking member of an ancient alien species. The Nibblonians tell her that their old enemy, the Brain Spawn, is making everyone on Earth stupid, and that Fry is the only one that can stop them, due to his lack of the Delta Brain Wave. She gets Fry to fight the Big Brain, and Fry wins. The brains leave Earth for no "raisin" and Nibbler blanks Leela's memory. Later, she gets a second eye crafted in, but removed it because of her new boyfriend's insensitivity. She also got married briefly to Fry, joined the New New York Mets and traveled back in time and helped cause the Roswell incident.

Leela's real home planet
Season 4
Leela was later captured by the Sewer Mutants, along with Fry and Bender, who wanted to punish them for dumping toxic waste in the sewers. They were rescued by two mysterious strangers who convinced the Supreme Mutant to change their punishment into a life-long banishment from the sewers, instead of execution. Leela, curious about the strangers, jumps back into the sewers and chases the two back to their house, threatening them with a gun. The two tell her that they were the ones who killed her parents, and Leela, in an uncontrolled rage, almost killed them, but was stopped by Fry. It is revealed that the two were actually Leela's parents, and Leela rejoices. Leela also impregnated Kif Kroker, became a superheroine called Clobberella, was stung by a Space Bee, and sold her hand in marriage to the Robot Devil in exchange for some mechanical ears.

Meets Lars Fillmore
Bender's Big Score
Shortly after Fry's opera, Planet Express delivery license is canceled. However; either due to the Box network's or the Professor's incompetence, it took two years for the staff to be informed. The true period of joblessness lasted for a few moments before Planet Express was "back on the air," During a party to celebrate the company's renewal, Hermes' head is chopped off in an Limbo accident, and Leela meets Lars Fillmore at the Head Museum. Ownership of Planet Express is stolen by the Scammer Aliens who discover the secret to time travel on Fry's ass, but Leela and Lars' relationship grows undisturbed. Fry watches them date with great envy and anger.

Despite both Leela and Lars getting laid off from their jobs, due to the Scammers tricking people out of their possessions, Lars proposes to Leela and Leela agrees. At the wedding, Hermes' head is chopped off a duplicate of his body that Bender went back in time to pick up for him. The professor inadvertenly reveals to Lars that a Time paradox duplicate is always doomed to die. Lars calls off the wedding and left Leela to depression.

Later, the entire population of Earth is forced to move to different planets, due to President Nixon being scammed out of Earth's remaining land and water. The crew moves to Neptune in response. There, Santa Claus is unable to attack them, being in a deep depression over being scammed out of his "Naughty List." They team up and plan to defeat the Scammers. At first, Nixon is skeptical of their chances to succeed, but Santa gets his factory of elves to build powerful weapons for the army. The small army that they assembled fought against the scammer's fleet of Solid Gold Death Stars, but their first leader, Zapp Brannigan, was taken down. Leela takes his place, but soon realizes that she can't control so many ships at one time. Thus, Hermes's head uses his bureaucratic skills to control the other ships and take down the Scammers' fleet.

During the 3008 New Years Eve Party that took place on Earth shortly afterward, Fry sees how sad Leela is without Lars and realizes that if he really loved her, he would care more about her happiness, rather than his own. He tries to get Leela back together with Lars, but is interrupted by Nudar, who survived the battle and wants to kill them. Lars sacrifices himself and saves Fry and Leela. After seeing the machine language time code on his butt, Leela realizes that Lars is actually Fry's time paradox duplicate. The crew all attend Lars's funeral where his video will explains what happened after he traveled back in time and why he decided not to marry Leela.

Later, Nibbler has Bender go back in time one last time to put the Time Code on Fry's butt to start the entire cycle. After completing his mission, Bender convinces the duplicates of him to return to the present instead of "coming up where they were logically supposed to." The large paradox caused by hundreds of Bender's makes a large rip in time and space.

Last tentacle-free person in the universe
The Beast with a Billion Backs
When the rip in time and space starts producing tentacles that attach itself to people, Leela and the crew (except Fry), become one of the few isolated pockets of tentacle free people. The crew try to escape Earth, but are blocked by Dr. Wernstrom's Diamondillium shield. They take cover in the Planet Express Building, along with Wernstrom, but Zoidberg is taken. Fry tries to get them to come out and join Yivo, but they refuse. Later, the tentacles infiltrate the building and the Professor, Hermes, and Wernstrom are overcome by the tentacles. Leela escapes with Amy on a Party Board.

While hiding in an alley, it is revealed to them that Zapp Brannigan was also free. They all hide together in an abandoned soup cabin in a remote area. The next day, Leela finds out that Zapp had slept with Amy, but is more surprised at the fact that the tentacles have found them. Leela manages to escape with a piece of the tentacle, but Zapp and Amy do not.

Leela goes back to Planet Express and examines the piece with a telescope. She realizes that the tentacles are actually Gentacles and that Yivo was actually mating with everyone in the universe. She pretends to have a tentacle attached and goes into the Church of Yivo's Religion where she reveals to the world the truth. The religion is abandoned, but they eventually go on a date with Yivo to make up. The Earthican council decides to break up with Yivo due to shkler lack of commitment, but Yivo proposes to them before they could say anything. Everyone in the universe moves to Yivo's Universe, but Leela was forced to go, despite being against it.

On Yivo, Leela was skeptic about the heavenly paradise at first, but when she finally admits to being happy, Bender and his Army of the Damned invade Yivo and takes them back to their universe.

Leegola
Bender's Game
Later in 3008, Leela is goaded by Sal into entering the Planet Express Ship into the Space Demolition Derby. She leads the crew to a victory, but finds herself in trouble when Zoidberg tattles to the professor about her reckless behavior. Leela is forced to wear a shock collar, designed to give her and electrical shock if she has any violent thoughts, among others.

After several hopeless attempts to convince Zoidberg, the staff doctor, that she doesn't need the collar any more, Leela grew accustomed with the electrical shocks and even begins to enjoy them. She, along with Fry and the professor, launch an attack on the Mombil Dark Matter mine in Alaska. She aids the team greatly by using her violence and eventually discovers that the mine was actually a farm that harvested the fecal matter of Nibblonians. Leela also finds her pet Nibbler there.

Suddenly, in the middle of the battle, the floor cracks open and Leela is sent to Cornwood, the land created by Bender's imagination. There, she becomes a centaur named Leegola. She joins Frydo, Titanius Anglesmith, Gynecaladriel, and the Great Wizard Greyfarn in forming the Fellowship and embark on a quest to defeat Momon, queen of evil. However, halfway through the quest, Leegola realizes that in her rage she had murdered an innocent monster. She vows not to harm another living being again and joins the other, more peaceful Centaurs.

Leegola later finds out that her friends were endangered by Momon's Army. She returns back to normal and convinces the other centaurs to form their own army and fight against Momon. In doing so, Momon's Army is defeated and her friends are saved. She, along with most of the Fellowship, go to the Geysers of Gygax where Momon destroys Cornwood and sends them back to the real world. Dark matter then becomes useless as fuel and they temporarily use Nibblonians as transport.

The new leader of the Feministas
Into the Wild Green Yonder
Leela, along with the rest of Planet Express, took a trip to Leo Wong's Mars Vegas, where they meet Frida Waterfall and the Feministas. Leela feels concerned about Leo's disrespect for nature in building the city, and adopts the last Desert Muck Leech.

Later, Leela and Amy were allowed into Wongminster, Leo's miniature golf club. Leo plans on destroying twelve percent of the Milky Way to expand his club, and sends Planet Express to do a scan for life in the twelve percent. Although they find a life filled asteroid, orbiting a Violet Dwarf Star, Professor Farnsworth ignores it and approves the area for demolition anyways. Upset at the disregard of the men, Leela joins the Feministas.

Leela was part of a Feminista protest at Wongminster, where, due to an accident, they kill the Headless body of Agnew, and flee, becoming fugitives. While hiding, Leela encourages the rest to be more forceful in protecting the environment by sabotaging Wong's construction of the golf course. They gain more and more members, and eventually take over the Planet Express Ship, as well as Hermes, Zoidberg, and Farnsworth.

Later, Fry unwittingly lures the Feministas out of their Honeybun Hideout, and leads to an exciting space chase through the miniature golf course where the Feministas ultimately get arrested by Bender. They have a trial (Earth v. Feministas), where they are sentenced to Maxi-Padlock, a prison for women.

After spending a few days in prison, and unsuccessfully trying to break out with Leela's muck leech, they are broken out by Bender, Farnsworth, Hermes, Zoidberg, and Scruffy, although only Leela, Amy, and LaBarbara managed to escape. They go to the Violet Dwarf, where they manage to stop it from getting destroyed, just in time for it to hatch into The Last Encyclopod. it is revealed that the muck leech was The Last Dark One, and it is killed after it murders Hutch Waterfall. The Encyclopod preserves Hutch's DNA, and leaves. Zapp then chases the Planet Express crew in the Nimbus. Leela confesses her love of Fry and they kiss before flying into the Panama Wormhole to escape.

Reborn
In July of 3010, she momentarily became a Bureaucrat.
Family
*Turanga Morris, father
*Turanga Munda, mother
*Grandmother
*Great-grandmother
*Due to an accident, and because of the reproductive process of Amphibiosans, she has several dozen offspring from Kif Kroker, currently living in an immature "tadpole" form in the swamp of the Kroker clan birthing grounds on Amphibios 9. About half of these have only one eye each, like her.
*In Bender's Big Score she almost married Lars Fillmore.
*In The Beast with a Billion Backs, she married Yivo, along with the rest of the universe, against her will.
*In "Time Keeps on Slippin'", she was briefly married to Fry due to the time skips, but then they got divorced during another time skip because she believed he tricked her into marriage. At the end of Into the Wild Green Yonder, she shares a kiss with Fry, after having admitted that she has 'waited too long' to let him know that she loves him. It would appear from that interaction (however brief), that she may be about to embark on a serious relationship with Fry. Time, however, will tell. (see Fry-Leela relationship for more info)
Trivia
*Her name can be interpreted in several ways: "Leela" sounds exactly like the term for "purple" in several languages, including German, Spanish, Portuguese, French (lilas), Danish (lilla), Swedish (lila) and Hungarian (lila). A further possibility is that the name is a parody of the heroine from The Fifth Element, Leeloo - the perfect woman. Additionally, in Bungie's 1994 PC game Marathon, there is an AI character named Leela. Lastly, she might have been inspired by a character from the British Sci-Fi series Doctor Who bearing the same name (Leela). "Turanga" may be derived from the symphony "Turangalila" by Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992). The term derives from Sanskrit and means, alternately, "Song of Love" and "Hymn to Joy". Alternately, Turanga may derive from Taronga Zoo, the name of which is an Indigenous Australian word for "beautiful view".
*Even though Turanga is her family name and not her first name, it is said first when pronouncing her full name which may mean her family is from East Asia, Hungary, Sri Lanka among other places in which surnames are said first in a personal name.
*The designers kept trying to make Leela's nose smaller, because it was larger than they thought appropriate for a female character, but Matt Groening insisted it stay the larger size.
*Unlike Fry, who is frequently chopped to pieces in the series, Leela tends to lose the use of her senses instead, namely sight and hearing.
*As Fate Assignment Officer, her code number was 1BDI (or "one beady eye").
**In another occular pun, Leela's apartment number is 1I.
*Books read by Leela include "True Stories of Courageous Animals" ("Parasites Lost"), "A Child's Garden of Space Legends" ("Teenage Mutant Leela's Hurdles"), "Dances of the ancient Bronx" ("Jurassic Bark"), "Great Machete Battles" ("Kif Gets Knocked Up a Notch") and "World's Bravest Hamsters" ("Lethal Inspection"), plus the magazine Nosy Inquirer, headline: Bigfoot turns 80! ("The Farnsworth Parabox")
*Tends to snore.
*Always uses lipstick, mostly pink, and is rarely seen without it.

*Used to brew her own beer at the orphanarium.
*Can do the Robot Dance like no one else.
*Owns her own harpoon.
*Tends to fill her day with humdrum activities.
*Is camera-shy.
*Usually prepares her dinners in advance for one month and then freezes them.
*Sometimes seen with a lime-green jacket in earlier episodes and Season 2.
*For obvious reasons, no one can give the evil eye quite like her.
*Adept in the use of weaponry like laser guns or machetes.
*Used to play the drums.
*Tends to play with her hair when upset or nervous.
*Frequently accused of poor hygiene (sweaty boot rash, etc), but may be at a disadvantage due to her mutant physiology and energetic lifestyle.
**As shown in the very first Anthology of Interest, Leela does not seem to wear socks under her boots. This may attribute to the 'poor' hygiene of her feet.
*Usually, Leela only wears jewellery on special occasions. The exception from this was the ring in "Space Pilot 3000" that Bender stole; it was never seen again. She also wears a bracelet made by her father at all times.
*Apart from Fry and Bender, she is the only character that appears in every episode of the show and in every comic.
*Has had five weddings; three were called off, and the other two were followed by divorce. Reverend Lionel Preacherbot performed the first three of these, Father Changstein El-Gamal performed the fourth. A sixth proposition was made, but the wedding never actually took place. It is unknown who performed her wedding to Cubert in 6ACV07
**To Alcazar, 2ACV09
**To Philip J. Fry, followed by divorce, 3ACV14
**To Robot Devil, 4ACV18
**To Lars Fillmore, 5ACV03
**To Yivo, no wedding, The Beast with a Billion Backs - 5ACV08
**To Cubert Farnsworth (in a previous universe, towards the mid 31st century) 6ACV07
*Can wield a gun with her foot, and hides one in her boot for easy access.
*May very well be the second-most important person in the universe behind Fry (though she doesn't know it).

*Leela, like her parents, has a second mutation. She grows skin covered spikes, called "elbow talons", from her elbows. However, she usually trims these.
*Became a centaur in 3.
*Actually continued to legally work at Applied Cryogenics until 2ACV11
*Has been seen in a lime-green tank top (instead of her usual white one) once, in "My Three Suns".
*At the end of Into the Wild Green Yonder, Leela reveals that she is in love with Fry and they finally kiss properly.
*Apparently wears a large contact lens.
*Wears size 12 shoes.
*Slept with Fry in her what-if scenario in "Anthology of Interest I" and possibly in real life (see "The Duh-Vinci Code"). Unambiguously slept with Fry in "The Prisoner of Benda", while her mind was in the Professor's body and Fry's mind was in Zoidberg's body.
*Has a singing boil on her body named Susan (possibly a third mutation).
*Licks her fingers starting with her pointer and ending with her thumb.
*Her surname is revealed in the episode "The Problem with Popplers".

Catchphrases
Leela doesn't really have a catchphrase, except possibly her yell "Hi-yah!".

She often uses old musical references, turning the first word into a verb and applying it to the last word as a noun. Examples:
*"This wangs chung!" - A reference to both the band Wang Chung, and their hit song "Everybody Have Fun Tonight", which includes the line "Everybody Wang Chung tonight" 3ACV03.
*"This toads the wet sprocket!" - A reference to the band Toad the Wet Sprocket 3ACV21.
*"Setting Bachman Turners to overdrive!" - A reference to the band Bachman–Turner Overdrive 6ACV13.

Bender also uses this formula when referring to her attraction to creative and musically-talented men. Examples:

*"Musicians really Rodger your Hammerstein." - A reference to the famous composers Rodgers and Hammerstein 4ACV18.

Additionally, Leela says "Oh, Lord!" quite a lot, usually just before a previous action comes back to haunt her, and has used variations of the phrase "Good night, sweet prince" from Hamlet when parting with Fry on several occasions (ITWGY, 6ACV11).

Two-eyed Leela
Leela has been seen with two eyes several times, though each time it appeared different:
*"When Aliens Attack" — To portray the role of Jenny MacNeil, a plastic eye is taped to the side of her face (which Zoidberg later eats). This is clearly the least-convincing appearance of a two-eyed Leela.
*"Amazon Women in the Mood" — When the Amazonians are approaching, a puddle ripples, causing Leela's reflection to distort, showing her briefly with two eyes. Her eyes appear to be rounder than the others.
*"The Cyber House Rules" — A second eye is grafted onto Leela's face. She later realizes she's better off being different, and has it removed. Her eyes are more narrow.
*"The Beast with a Billion Backs" — When the Professor asks if Leela is winking or blinking, Leela wears a pair of two-eyed glasses to show him.

Dr. John A. Zoidberg is a Decapodian employed as staff doctor at Planet Express 1ACV02 and an honorary Globetrotter 3ACV14. He is only tolerated at Planet Express because of his ability to cut things 6ACV14. An extremely poor man and a bad doctor without a real degree, he is still lovable (despite spouting foul language sometimes) to many and hated by others. He is also noted as the only alien member of the Planet Express crew.

Personality
Desperate for acceptance, Zoidberg lives with a continuing delusion that he is well regarded by the rest of the Planet Express crew. He does not seem to be very intelligent, but is rather nice and friendly. This is despite the fact that most of his co-workers look down on him, especially Hermes, who likes to make his life even more miserable. Dr. Zoidberg is Professor Farnsworth's oldest friend, which suggests that Zoidberg is much older than he appears. A citizen of Earth, he loves his chosen home planet for the personal freedom it provides 4ACV05. He is also apparently the only intelligent organism on Earth deemed nice by the Robot Santa Claus 2ACV04. It is unknown why, but it may be because of a glitch in Santa or because of Zoidberg's kind and innocent personality.

Biography
Early years
Dr. Zoidberg was born on Decapod 10 and seems to have visited high school there, going to school together with and having a crush on Edna 2ACV05. During that time, his face was covered in barnacles, for which he was laughed at.

As a youngster, Zoidberg wanted to become a comedian, following the footsteps of his uncle Harold Zoid, but he was discouraged by his parents, whereupon he developed an interest in medical science 3ACV08. In spite of trying to win his surrounding's respect, he was then looked down on because of giving up his dream of being a comedian. Eventually, he went to medical school and left his home planet to seek his fortune on Earth, although it is not known whether he studied on Decapod 10 or on Earth. He never received a doctorate in medicine, but in art history 6ACV05. However, he started practicing medicine nonetheless. He probably married an unknown woman during this time, as his wedding album was destroyed by the Professor to make his Banach-Tarski Dupla-Shrinker work. 6ACV17

Zoidberg started to work at Planet Express in 2992 3ACV11, a long time before the rest of the crew arrived.

Later years
Although his medical career meant giving up his dream of becoming a comedian, Zoidberg has since tried on occasion to be a freelance comedian of some sort, but lack the necessary talent and sense of humour. In his biggest try, he even had a minor part in his uncle's film The Magnificent Three in 3003.

Zoidberg once saved Fry's life by transplanting his head onto Amy's shoulder when his body was severely damaged in a car crash on Jupiter's moon Europa 2ACV07. On another occasion, he tried to kill Fry in the Decapodian tradition of Claw-Plach 2ACV05. He has served as a military doctor in the conflict with Spheron 1 2ACV17 and defeated the Decapodian oppressors who had occupied Earth in response to Zoidberg being sentenced to death for eating an Earth flag 4ACV05. On one occasion he travelled through time to 1947 Roswell 3ACV16, was captured by the US Army, met President Harry Truman (it is unclear which of them was more baffled by the other), and was partially vivisected before being rescued and returned to the future.

Character Description
Family
*Norm, Sam and Sadie, parents 3ACV08, presumably one is the woman who raised him 4ACV05, the other two are deceased biological parents. He referred to one of them (his mother) as a saint, which was most likely just an expression. His parent's original intentions were for him to become a Lawyer. (US#48)
*Harold Zoid, uncle 3ACV08.
*His brother Norman and up to nine other siblings that budded from Zoidberg during the coral stage of his larval stadium. A duplicate Norman dies when he is sucked into the Fountain of Aging, but all other siblings are never mentioned again 4ACV09.
*Zoidfarb, cousin — Zoidberg received an Xmas card from him in 3001 2ACV04.
*Cubert, godson 6ACV09.
*Unknown wife, what happened to her is unknown. 6ACV17

Production
The original inspiration and the basic traits and characteristics were developed by David X. Cohen, while the cartoon design was created by Matt Groening. The later refinement and addition of various traits came from the various writers.

Cohen's name for Dr Zoidberg came from a video game he had developed during the 1980s, called "Zoid", which was largely inspired by the popular arcade game Qix. Cohen tried to get the then famous publisher Brøderbund to publish the game. Unfortunately, Brøderbund refused to publish Cohen's assembly-written game, and he shelved it. Dr Zoidberg was thus named to honour those wasted years in college.

Cohen's inspiration came from Bones McCoy from Star Trek, the doctor on the U.S.S. Enterprise. Bones was often faced with treating aliens and other non-humans, including Spock. Cohen's idea for Zoidberg was the exact opposite, where an alien would perform on humans. Zoidberg's trait of being a bad doctor was then established.

Later traits, such as his lust for seafood, became apparent in "A Fishful of Dollars". More demeaning traits such as being poor and lonely came in "Put Your Head on My Shoulder"; eating garbage and being homeless appeared later as well.

Certain contradicting situations can be seen in "A Flight to Remember", where Zoidberg is seen being given a suite, something that the writers would not give him in the later course of the series.

Voice
Billy West has often stated that the voice of Zoidberg was inspired by profile actors from Yiddish theater such as Lou Jacobi and George Jessel.

Additional Info
Trivia
*As the show progresses, Zoidberg's apparent utility becomes less obvious, and the Planet Express staff shun his presence from one instance to another.
*As with all Decapodians, Zoidberg's mannerisms, speech, and personality are representative of dry East Coast humor readily seen in Jewish communities.
*He claims to have lost his medical degree in a volcano.
*In earlier episodes he is animated with teeth, but in later episodes he is drawn without. His mouth frills are prehensile and can move independently, although most of the time they remain loose.
*Is apparently his own medical corporation, as described on the door to his office.
*Zoidberg has a top fin or crest on his head that appears at times of emotional duress, such as "Why Must I Be a Crustacean in Love?" and Bender's Big Score. It seems to be linked to his species' equivalent to testosterone, as it appears to be linked to both aggression and arousal, as shown in Bender's Game and "Attack of the Killer App". Also, the fin appears when he remembers a forgotten event.
*His greatest fantasy is to be a grandmother ("Subjugated yet honored!").
*Hermes from the earliest episodes seems to harbor a bitter hatred toward Zoidberg, never explained or given a rationale. This starts in "Hell Is Other Robots", when Hermes states someone (in fact Bender, who was addict to it) has been using a lot of electricity, then blames Zoidberg who exclaims "MEEE?". Hermes later removes the office's salt-water cooler to save money, prompting Zoidberg to blurt out, "This is a witch-hunt!"
*An alternate version of him as a blob-like creature appears in Bender's Game, although he begins as an innocent Dungeon Monster.
*In the Halloween 2008 cartoon of Homestar Runner, the Poopsmith is dressed as Zoidberg. Also, if you click him a the end of the toon, the King of Town uses the phrase "Good news, everyone"
*Apparently likes Barbados Slim (Although he says he likes a lot of people, possibly a catchphrase).
*He has been shown to cough up colorful beads after eating copious amounts of dirt, which can be sold to make money. This is only seen in the episode "Bendin' in the Wind".

*It is revealed in "The Duh-Vinci Code" that his doctorate is in Art History.
*His birthday is the day after Amy's.
*His claws and exoskeleton are incredibly strong and resilient. His claws can cut through human flesh, bone, and even some metals while his exoskeleton is impervious to knives and swords.
*He is first mentioned to be desperately poor in the episode "Put Your Head on My Shoulder".
*In Insane in the Mainframe, it is said he started working in Planet Express in 2992, though in Möbius Dick, he is seen working since the start, around 2961.
Catchphrases and Running Jokes
*(At inappropriate times) Hello
*Sometimes he will (with a grin) exclaim "What an honor!" ("Roswell that Ends Well").
*Excellent, excellent!
* (Famous person)? I love that guy!
*Woop woop woop woop!iiw (This sound effect is based on sound effects made by The Three Stooges.)
*Hooray!
*I'll take eight! (in reference to Fry's Holophonor record, and the newspaper declaring "the world's greatest opera" sucks). This phrase is only used in the original series finale
*Dibs on...! or alternative forms of calling dibs on something. Zoidberg usually comes late to Bender (for Leela's iPod in Into the Wild Green Yonder and the ship's shotgun in "Parasites Lost") or Amy (for Leela's maid of honor in Bender's Big Score)
*(Depressed, after being insulted, ignored, or one-upped) Awwww...

Also, he is usually shown to be highly unintelligent when it comes to being a doctor, such as claiming Amy the father of Leela's poppler, humans having multiple mouths, and Fry being a robot. More so, he often mistakes the human penis for other objects, especially that of Hermes. The closest he has ever been to showing competence in the field of medical science was in "Parasites Lost", but only because he saw it in a commercial.

The Decapodians are a race of sentient lobster-like creatures, originating from Decapod 10. They have blue eyes, red skin and hand-like mouths. The Decapodians seem to be a bald species, much like the Antarians, the Amphibiosans and the Morboians, though they can grow hair that instantly turns white after experiencing a traumatizing event. Their society is often pictured in contrast to that of Earth. The Decapodians are ruled by the Decapodian Emperor, but while many indications of their society seems to suggest a totalitarian government, they have a democratic process. They are also a member of the Democratic Order of Planets. The most wellknown of the Decapodians is Planet Express staff doctor John A. Zoidberg.

Society
Culture
Decapodian culture shows the traits of being authoritarian and they seem to be strict beings, who do not welcome change to their society. Despite the authoritarian sense in the species' members, many of them are known to flock to other worlds, perhaps in search of a less strict society. It can be assumed that Decapodian society isn't strict in format, but essence of its authoritarianism is uncanny, and as a result the sense stems to its citizens.

Decapodians live in buildings made of packed sand, and much of their infrastructure is based upon sea-based material and imagery, such as a crablike car. Decapodians often settle matters of honour and lesser matters such as whether abbreviations count in Scrabble during their ritual of Claw-Plach, a battle to the death before an audience.
For some reason, most Decapodians have generic Earthican names such as Edna, John, Norman, etc.

Parenting
Parenting is perhaps one of the more complicated parts of Decapodian culture. And while clues are revealed during the course of the series, it remains unclear how exactly the parent-child combination works in Decapodian society.

In "Why Must I Be a Crustacean in Love?", it is revealed that when Decapodians passed on their genes, they die. But in order for the establishment of Decapodian society to make any sense, a former generation (or more generations) must remain behind to take care of the offspring, in order to teach them with the cultures of society, which means that Decapodian society must have a regular "reboot" of society. This would mean that all decapodians are exactly the same age, except the ones who stayed behind to look after the offspring. Alternatively, there may be two generations active at any given time, with the majority of the older generation all dying during mating season.

Further evidence are introduced in "That's Lobstertainment!", when Zoidberg mentions to Harold Zoid, that he is the boy of Norm, Sam and Sadie. The "mother" shown in "A Taste of Freedom" can be assumed to be a parental figure, rather than Zoidberg's actual biological mother (who he could never have known, especially since she notes that his parents are in graves). A possible explanation can be that Norm, Sam and Sadie are all parental figures, who took care of Zoidberg among others. An alternative explanation is that two of the "parents" are his actual biological figures, and the last is his parental figure; either "Sadie" or "Sam[antha]".

Politics
Politics in Decapodian society seems at best complex. They are known to have an Emperor, but at the same time, they have a democratic process to elect new leaders. It is also possible that the elections are essentially a show for the citizens.

Despite the chain of leadership, Decapodian ambassadors are allowed to declare war upon other governments and lead the wars. For instance, Ambassador Mervin lead the war against Earth in 3003. The Decapodian Army's foremost advantage is their warships, but these unfortunately are expensive, so replacements for the warships, such as the Mobile Oppression Palace are built to maintain the oppression of newly conquered worlds. Unfortunately for Decapod 10, Dr. Zoidberg destroyed the Mobile Oppression Palace that was in place on Earth.

Anatomy
Organs
Exterior
Like lobsters or crabs on Earth, Decapodians have no bones. Instead they have an exoskeleton—a hard, chitinous shell which gives their body the rigidity needed to move about. These shells—like seemingly most of their other organs—are not an integral part of the body, but are moulted and replaced when they grow too large (3ACV01). They may vary in colour from pink, red, or brown, and all hues in between. They have claws instead of hands and feet, and have a row of four small finger-like flaps that cover their mouths. The thorax has three ridges, possibly containing orifices, and ink pouches are set in the armpits. A blowhole is set on top of the head, and the males possess a decorative fin in the same place that can be erected at will in times of the mating frenzy. Males also have testicles located at the back of their necks. Decapodians also breathe through gills that are on the sides of their necks, and Zoidberg has been seen burping using these fins.

Other than above mentioned organs and functions, Decapodians have an extremely complex nature, with many functions and organs that really have no use (for example their four hearts). It has also been hinted that disemboweling a Decapodian is nonlethal, and a lot of their organs may be the result of their numerous parasites.

When threatened, a Decapodian can unleash an ink defense similar to that of an octopus. The Decapodian rapidly takes off their clothes, releases black ink from their armpits while screaming, and run away while their enemy stands shocked and, hopefully, momentarily blinded.

Decapodians (or at least Zoidberg) also appear to have an additional head inside their mouth (6ACV10), but this might also be some sort of parasite, such as the Cymothoa exigua.

Interior
Decapodians are cold-blooded, and the blood appears to be light purple in colour. Internal organs are numerous and seem to be vestigial or redundant. They include, but are not limited to:
*Four hearts (though they could survive with less)
*A Gas bladder
*An empathy bladder
*A stink gland, which gives off foul odours when they're bored
*A freshwater stomach and a saltwater stomach (vomiting from both of them is a sign of happiness)
*A brain in their rump.

Life Cycle
Decapodians go through many different stages during their lives. Starting off as tiny larvae in a puddle, they progress through no less than a dozen forms (4ACV09). In their "Coral Form", their siblings bud off. In their mature form, Decapodians are bipedal humanoids. The mating phase is probably not part of their life cycle, but a ritual they go through during their mating season.

Pearls
Like many Earth mollusks, Decapodians create pearls when irritants are introduced into their throats. These pearls are blue in appearance and can be used to make jewelry. (3ACV03)

Reproduction
As with life on Earth, female Decapodians carry eggs, which are fertilized by the males. Like many sea creatures, their survival strategy is to produce massive numbers of offspring, rather than to protect a small number of children until adulthood. Decapodians have no concept of love, and enter into relationships only for reproduction. When their mating season arrives, each male attempts to attract a female with an erotic display in the same place as the humans does their erotic display—the beach. Successful couples will participate in the mating frenzy, while less successful ones lose their chance of reproduction.

After participating in the frenzy, the Decapodians die a gruesome death. This brings into question how Zoidberg knew his parents, but not enough is known to draw any conclusions (i.e., they may have been adoptive parents from another generation). Zoidberg also states that he is "Norm and Sam and Sadie's boy" (3ACV08), which implies Decapodians may have three parents, whether that be one biological and two adoptive or some other combination (or all biological), however it may also be coincidence, that three Decapodians picked up Zoidberg, which may also suggest that some children are taken care of, after they return to shore. It may also be that two parents are biological, and one adoptive who didn't get the chance to mate. Nevertheless, one of Zoidberg's memories showed him with a mother figure when he was a young humanoid (4ACV05)

It is also possible that not all matings result in death, but only matings related to the frenzy; Yivo was able to mate with Decapodians without causing any known deaths in "The Beast with a Billion Backs", and Fry mated with Leela while in Zoidberg's body in "The Prisoner of Benda". This suggests that they may be able to mate with members of other species without it resulting in their death, or that they can choose whether to unleash their productive jelly. It can also mean that a Decapodian mind must be present in its original Decapodian body in order for the Decapodian to fully mate.

Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth is an aged, eccentric inventor, founder and owner of Planet Express and an honorary Globetrotter. He is crotchety, absent-minded and sometimes brilliant, most well-known for his work in 30th century robotics. In 2999 he was the last known relative of Philip J. Fry, later, Professor Farnsworth discovered that he had fathered a son, as well as the clone that he had kept hidden. In addition, he also serves as a tenured professor at Mars University teaching the Mathematics of Quantum Neutrino Fields. Farnsworth is an inventor of both useful and impractical things, some of which are extremely dangerous devices such as his Doomsday devices.

Personality wise, he varies from callous disregard to sentimental affection. He has no objection to sending his crew to missions which may eventually mean death to his crew, and has sent previous crews to their deaths before. Farnsworth is the oldest living member of the Academy of Inventors, where he often competes with his arch nemesis, Dr. Ogden Wernstrom.

Personality
Hubert Farnsworth is a mad scientist, though how extreme this tendency is varies depending on how writers feel best suits the episode. Farnsworth's name comes from Philo Farnsworth, who invented the television. In addition, his first name, Hubert, may come from Eric Kaplan's former professor, Hubert Dreyfus. The only thing his name has in common with the name of Philip J. Fry is the unsettled "J." as their middle initial, but this may just be a common joke Matt Groening sets for his characters.

Though Professor Farnsworth is a genius, he is also very senile and sometimes forgets things that had happened only moments earlier. He also has a habit of saying "Good news, everyone", which more often than not means bad news. He is known for following up his statements with completely contradictory statements, such as his definition of Space Honey from "The Sting". Hubert also often appears indifferent to the wellfare of his crew, often sending them on dangerous missions which could get them killed, though it's highly unlikely that he does this intentionally. He could also sometimes have periods of maniacal laughter. However Farnsworth isn't actually a bad person and appears to share some level of friendship with the other members of Planet Express. He also cares about his clone, Cubert, treating him as though he were his biological son.

Farnsworth also enjoys public nudity, and may have been convicted. His urge to undress becomes much greater around Xmas.

Biography
Early Life
Hubert J. Farnsworth was born on 9 April, 2841 – although claimed until 3001 that it was actually 2851 – in the nerdiest slum of New New York, Hell's Laboratory. At age 8, he learned to read, albeit while still in diapers.

Hubert enjoyed his teenage years as a nerd with an affection for role-playing games. After 14 years of graduate school, Farnsworth became a scientist and designed such things as fast cars, trendy night spots and beautiful women, all out of his one-room apartment. Evidence suggests that he may also have been a hippie and a disco boy, possibly during graduate school.

Career path
By 2900 Farnworth had taken a teaching position at Mars University where his most promising student was an up and coming young science undergrad named Ogden Wernstrom. Sadly, the two had a falling out over a pop-quiz score which lead to Wernstrom's hundred year quest for revenge. While retaining a role at the university, Hubert was eventually hired at Mom's Friendly Robot Company, staying there for the next fifty years. During this time his inventiveness lead to the creation of many new products and breakthrough technologies, such as the use of Dark Matter as fuel, the first robot capable of qualifying for a boat loan and a sport-utility robot, the design of which would become the basis of all robots running in the early 31st century. It was during this time he also began an on-again, off-again relationship with Mom, the owner of the company, who was having a similar relationship with Wernstrom. By the end of this period, Mom had fallen pregnant with their child, a secret she would keep from him for many years.

Planet Express
After numerous tries with Mom, and with a need for money to fund his research, he founded Planet Express, an interstellar delivery company, on 2961. Already, he hired his oldest friend, Dr. John A. Zoidberg as the company's staff doctor. He hired his first crew already, but unfortunately they were swallowed by a Four-dimensional space whale. In addition, he hired Hermes Conrad as the company's bureaucrat some time later. In 2998, Amy Wong entered the company as an engineering intern, but has since remained in the company for several years. Also in his employ is Scruffy, the company janitor who lives in the basement of Planet Express.

Farnsworth has had numerous crews, whom he frequently sends to their doom. As a result many have died horribly or gone missing. Shortly after one such instance, late on the 31st of December 2999, he learned that he was not the last surviving member of his family. His long lost and far removed uncle, Philip J. Fry, had just been defrosted. Fry, Turanga Leela and Bender Bending Rodríguez were hired early the next morning and have been his longest surviving crew, who despite 10 years in the company remain alive.

Farnsworth doesn't always just send his crew on simple delivery missions, but has sent them on charity missions as well as highly controversial missions. Even when his crew and company is unrelated or unsuited to the task, he isn't shy to send them along anyway.

Legacy
As a member of the Academy of Inventors, the Professor has created many things. Often these don't live up to his expectations and are ridiculed by his fellow inventors. Occasionally, however, they can help save the day; the Smell-O-Scope for instance was laughed at by colleagues and Wernstrom had his revenge by giving it a poor grade, shortly afterward it detected a giant ball of garbage in space that was on a collision course with New New York. After the Planet Express crew averted the crisis, Wernstrom once more announced a thirst for revenge.

After his 150th birthday party, Hubert realised that he had no one to continue his work when he is gone. After days hidden in the lab, he emerged announcing that the clone he'd been growing the past twelve years would be his heir. Unfortunately, Cubert did not want to follow in his footsteps. Farnsworth finally decided that his life was over, and revealed his actual age, 160, the age at which Sunset Squad Robots would come and take him away to the Near Death Star. Soon after a rescue by his crew, Cubert finally decided to carry on with Farnsworth's research.

Corporate Takeover
After a brief reunion with Mom on Mother's Day of the previous year, 3002 saw Farnsworth's company taken over twice. On the first occasion, Cubert and Hermes' son Dwight expanded their paper route to consume Planet Express. Soon after this takeover, Awesome Express fell apart due to poor management. On the second occasion, a shareholder meeting resulted in a mysterious stranger taking over as CEO from Farnsworth. Castle's running of the company was more successful, despite no deliveries being made during this time. Inevitably the company dropped back to it's original poor stock price after the new CEO's death and Farnsworth's reinstatement.

Old Problems
When a heatwave hits and the usual method to counteract global warming fail, the Professor is forced to admit that all modern robots are descended from his designs, which produce lots of pollution. The scientists at the conference plan to destroy the robots is soon thwarted and Hubert received a medal for saving the planet and its robots. About a week later after his staff decided that he had become too old, they took him to The Bubbling Geezer a visit that resulted in everyone becoming younger. The eventual resolution of this situation took them to the Fountain of Aging, where the waters made him "even older" than he had been.

Dark Matters
Over the years, Farnsworth's feud with Wernstrom continued to grow, and when an anomaly forms a short distance from the Earth the pair compete in Deathball to decide who will investigate. After Farnsworth's investigation proved unsuccessful the pair found themselves united for the first time since the pop quiz as the collaborated in research together, protested and shared a prison cell. But their new found friendship fell apart once more following an inter-universe relationship with Yivo.

When Mom faked a dark matter shortage in 3008 in order to increase the price of dark matter worldwide, Farnsworth finally told the tale of how he discovered it, and decided to end it all, so that scientists could spend their time on developing cleaner fuels, such as Whale Oil. Farnsworth managed to enter Mom's dark matter mine on Alaska, which turned out to be a Nibblonian farm, where Mom had kept Nibblonians imprisoned for years to produce dark matter. However, with the help of his crew and his long lost son Igner, Farnsworth managed to bring the crystals close enough together to render dark matter useless. After converting to whale oil and receiving a few bribes for scientific endorsements, he joined the rest of the crew on a journey into a wormhole. Although most of the crew were killed as the ship crashed into Earth in early 3010, he survives and helps bringing them back to life.

Awards
Professor Farnsworth has been given the following awards.
*The Academy of Inventors award of 3000 1ACV08.
*One Fields Medal (TBWABB).
*The Polluting Medal of Pollution 4ACV08.

Relationships
Farnsworth has at least on 3 accounts went back with his major love, Mom. At around age 90, he worked for Mom's Friendly Robot Company, where he designed robots for the company as well as toys, such as Q. T. McWhiskers, but Mom's suggestion of turning the toy into a giant made Farnsworth leave her, because she simply didn't understand him and from then on conflict grew between them.

He would later return to Mom's company to work on creating actual robots, but back then, robots were stiff moving and not very efficient, however, when he sacrificed fuel efficiency, he succeeded, unfortunately, this robot design also caused global warming. Why he left Mom this time remains unsettled, but it may be because he once realised she was evil.

On a third occasion, Farnsworth was once again at the company with Mom, where he discovered the secret of Dark Matter, around the time where Mom's sons were born. But when he found out she had left him for Dr. Ogden Wernstrom, he left once again.

While his relationship with Mom has certainly been his largest, it has not been his only one, during a brief period of regaining the appearance of youth using stem cells from GeneWorks, S.K.G., he found a girl willing to date him, although she also turned out to have used her tax rebate for a belly ring to make her appear thinner. There was also a brief fling with Hattie while they were on the Titanic.

In the episode "Proposition Infinity", it is shown that the Professor had a 40 year long relationship with a woman whom he met before Mom. This woman cheated on the Professor with a robot which caused the Professor's hatred towards robossexual couples. It was also later revealed that that woman was herself a robot, and her name was Unit 47.

A creepy utilization of his body occurred in "The Prisoner of Benda", when he trades bodies with Amy. Amy then proceeds to trade bodies with Leela, causing Fry to himself trade bodies with Dr. Zoidberg. Leela used Farnsworth's body to prove that her relationship with Fry is partially physical. At dinner, Leela (in Farnsworth's Body) is disgusted by Fry (in Zoidberg's body), and vice-versa. When Leela-Farnsworth tells Fry-Zoidberg to prove his love, Fry-Zoidberg passionately kisses Leela-Farnsworth. This eventually leads to Leela-Farnsworth having Intercourse with Fry-Zoidberg. this marks the first known time he physically slept with a male. Mentally, however, Leela was the one who slept with Fry-Zoidberg.
Additional Info
Trivia
*He was named Farnsworth in honor of Philo T. Farnsworth, the inventor of modern television, which was unveiled to America at the same World's Fair as Futurama (New York World's Fair) that the show is named for. Additionally, the name Hubert roughly translates as bright mind in Proto-Germanic language. In "All the Presidents' Heads", he is revealed to be related to a Philo Farnsworth, who, while an inventor, did not invent what the real-world Philo invented.
*Throughout the series, we are never shown the professor's eyes, until the comic "Downsized!". This may or may not have been authorized by Matt Groening.
*Has the same blood type as Amy Wong. He has stated that is one of the reasons why he likes "keeping her around" (1ACV02).
*His bank account number is 299792458, which is the speed of light in meters per second.
*Became a wizard (quite possibly a parody of Gandalf) in Bender's Game.
*A certain running gag with the writers is to drop hints in the show that the professor is a cannibal of sorts.
*Also known as the Catman, due to his ability to land on his feet after falling great distances. However, it has apparently been so long since the last time he used this ability that even the Professor himself has forgotten why they called him the Catman.
*Has a "Thug Life" tattoo on his back.
*His driving position is up against the windscreen of the ship, a parody of the stereotypes of elderly drivers.
*Like his extremely distant relative Fry, he had red hair when he was younger.
*At the start of the series his voice was nearly identical to Fry's, only slightly deeper and much older-sounding. As time went on however, the Professor's voice became much more distinct from Fry's, partly due to concerns by the creators that viewers with poor or no eyesight would find it hard to distinguish between the two.
*Is probably the oldest living human on Earth, excluding the heads in jars and people who were cryogenically frozen, because of his escape from the Near Death Star 2ACV10, although his time traveling would make him, chronologically, much, much older.
*The Professor is assumed to be the descendant of Yancy Fry Jr. and his wife. However, in the storyboard for "Space Pilot 3000", the Professor is the descendant of Fry's sister and a man named Eddie Farnsworth. Both Fry's sister and Eddie Farnsworth were later erased from the episode and the show.

Catchphrase
Originally, the professor's catchphrase was going to be "...though I am already in my pajamas." This was only used in the first and second episodes.

The professor's basic catchphrase is "Good news, everyone!" The phrase is used so frequently that it was already possible to joke about it in the seventh episode.

He also occasionally refers to "Zombie Jesus" either by saying "Sweet Zombie Jesus" or "Holy Zombie Jesus".

When he is spoken to or asked a question, he also commonly says "Eh-wha?" This is used often to emphasize his senility and hearing loss.

Occasionally, he will say something along the lines of "What in ________ happened?!" For instance, "What in Sega Genesis happened to you?!" or "What in Satan's glorious name is going on here?!"

Another "catchphrase" used by the Professor is "Oh My..."

The last catchphrase used by the Professor is "Wernstrom!"
update
The Planet Express ship (AKA the Science-mobile) was designed and built by Prof. Farnsworth. The ship's color is said to be "Electric Mucus." The ship is capable of traveling at 99% light speed (which is a lot faster than traditional light speed since the speed of light was increased in 2208), but in fact it does not move at all. Instead, its engines move the universe around it. This is made possible in part by its incredible dark matter reactor equipped with afterburners providing 200% fuel efficiency, and needs about 63 balls of dark matter to be full. However, due to dark matter becoming ineffective as fuel, the ship now runs on whale oil. According to Bender's Game, the ship has the LX package. The only noted upgrade is a gold hood ornament which was stolen by a punk in a rough space neighbourhood.

The ship is surprisingly comfortable inside. It carries two Hover Dollies to help move heavy cargo around 2ACV02. The ship can also be used in combat and has fought against the Robot Mafia, the Space Pirates, and the Omicronians during their first invasion of Earth. It is so effective in battle that it fought in the defence of Earth with the DOOP forces.

The ship's computer is sentient. For a while, it was involved in a romantic relationship with Bender 4ACV03. When things turned sour, they had to wipe the ship's memory to regain control.

It is joked about in the DVD commentary for The Beast with a Billion Backs that the Planet Express ship seems to have numerous different systems, many of which are redundant. Specifically, jokes were made about how using a crane to load dark matter was that film's method of doing so. While it is obvious that the redundant systems are mistakes on the part of the writers, an in-universe explanation for this could be Prof. Farnsworth's senility causing him to create more mechanisms to perform a task that would never be necessary. It can also be explained by the numerous times that the ship needs to be rebuilt that it necessitates that a new system be devised.

Like all leading characters in the show, the ship has an overbite.

In addition, the ship carries a separate AI: The auto-pilot (possibly named Dewey). Bender and the auto-pilot have had drinking contests, but the auto-pilot is rarely seen on-screen. The auto-pilot appears in 3ACV06 and the voice is the same as the ship's (before the personality change) in 4ACV03 this suggests they may not actually be separate entities. Additionally, in Love and Rocket, the Ship handled auto-pilot duties. Leela has referred to the autopilot as a drunk, although it is apparently standard protocol to carry a full compliment of olives with which to make Martinis.

Planet Express, inc. is an intergalactic delivery company owned by Professor Farnsworth to fund his research. Its primary location is located in New New York, and its crew includes many important characters of the series. The current crew recently had their 100th delivery, and to celebrate, Bender threw a 100th Delivery Party.

The company scrapes by, in spite of fierce competition from the leader in package delivery, Mom's Friendly Delivery Company. They stay in business thanks to their complete disregard for safety and minimum wage laws, and the Professor's unscrupulous acceptance of the occasional bribe.

History
Creation
Planet Express was founded by Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth as method of funding his research in 2961. At that time, Zoidberg was already an employee, and a delivery crew had been hired, consisting of Lando Tucker, Candy, and Lifter, although on their first delivery, the three were swallowed by a Four-dimensional space whale(except for Zoidberg because he took the escape pod), which began the long line of delivery crews. The first employee of the year was then 13-year-old Amy Wong. Amy has supposedly not worked with the company from the beginning, as she does not seem to know any of the multiple previous crews before the current. While little is known about Planet Express' early history, we know that Hermes Conrad has been with the company for as early as 2993.

Besides regular staff, such as Hermes Conrad, bureaucrat, and interns, such as Amy Wong, the company's most important positions are the starship crew, whom are to pilot the Planet Express ship for deliveries, and essentially the business itself. Though, it is not unlikely for the rest of the staff to tag along with the ship for a mission or two.

Planet Express has had a history of security issues, several prior crews to Turanga Leela, Philip J. Fry and Bender Bending Rodríguez have apparently been lost or killed during difficult missions, which Farnsworth relentlessly sent them out on. The current crew can be assumed to be the most successful crew so far, in terms of survival, although the professor assert that they are still not as good as his previous crew.

At least two former crews are known to exists, one lead by Captain Musky and another which was killed by Space wasps/Space bees (alternatively, there might have been two crews entirely, though this is just a continuity error). The first crew was swallowed by a four-dimensional space whale, but survived until 3010, with Lifter and Candy not aging, while Lando Tucker nearly sucked dry due to the whale's feeding. According to the crew just before the current, they too were not as good as the crew prior to them. One may assume that Farnsworth simply tells all his crews this, as a form of motivation. Farnsworth himself though doesn't really seem to think highly of the chances of his crew surviving, as he evidently is looking for a replacement crew even before they are gone.

New crew... what happened to the old crew?
In early 3000, after being unfrozen, Philip J. Fry, along with his new found friends, Turanga Leela and Bender Bending Rodríguez joins Planet Express as its new crew. In the new crew's early beginnings, they start out with simple missions, but Farnsworth also gets himself involved with charity missions, such as saving the animals on Vergon 6.

For not informing the authorities of his vast amount of security issues with the company, the professor thanked his crew by inviting them onto the cruise ship Titanic, which was, most unfortunately, sucked into a black hole 1ACV10.

Changing hands
In 3001, during a nervous breakdown from Hermes, the company's bureaucrat was replaced temporary by Morgan Proctor, whose changes to the company was not entirely pleasing for the crew, except Fry, who Proctor had an eye for. However, in an attempt to get Bender's brain back, Hermes regained his lust for bureaucracy, and during a sorting of the master inpile, Hermes felt upon a form discrediting Proctor's stature as a bureaucrat, and Hermes was hired back at the company – at severely reduced pay of course, and so was the rest, apparently.

The sons of Farnsworth and Hermes, Cubert and Dwight, in an attempt to impress their fathers, created a competing business, Awesome Express, and after some successful paperwork, they took over the business of Planet Express as well. This takeover, much to Farnsworth's and Hermes' dismay, were eventually annulled when Leela discovered that they had not even delivered the newspaper they were hired to.

PlanEx
In 3002 came perhaps the biggest takeover of the Planet Express corporation, by a former 1980s stockbroker, Steve Castle, replaced Farnsworth as the CEO of Planet Express, inc. after suggestion from Fry.

When Steve Castle became CEO of the company, he changed the focus of the company to brand and image rather than actual package delivery. He changed the logo and name of the company as well to "PlanEx", as well as a styled 1980s advertisement for the company.

Steve Castle's foremost for PlanEx was the giant corporation of Mom's Friendly Delivery Company, which controlled most of Earth's planetary and interplanetary deliveries. Despite being ruled as an impossible feat, Fry and Castle assured the board of the company that they would take of the battle.

Castle and Mom met at Elzar's Fine Cuisine, which they negotiated about the future of both companies, and eventually Castle decided to sell Planet Express to Mom, so "she can gut us as competitors".

The sale of PlanEx were held at the Intergalactic Stock Exchange, where it turned out that Dr. Zoidberg owned 51% of the company up until that point, which Steve Castle had purchased, resulting in him being able to cast the vote required to sell the company. However, despite the employees' discontent with the sale, they soon discovered that their stocks were worth over 100 a piece, at which point they wanted Mom to buy the company regardless.

Unfortunately, just as the purchase of the stocks were to go ahead, Steve Castle's fatal disease of boneitis kicked in, and died upon the stage. And after telling his story, Fry eventually made the stock price fall to 3 cents, apparently "worth less than when they were worthless" according to Hermes.
When Fry, Bender, and the Professor started testing the forward time machine and were accidentally sent 7000 years into the future in "The Late Philip J. Fry", the remaining Planet Express crew thought they had died, so Leela seized control of the company. She laid off Zoidberg and there were tough times. Leela, Hermes, Amy, and possibly Cubert pulled together, and 20 years later the delivery service had become incredibly successful.

In 3050, Planet Express had achieved even more, and kept growing and growing, despite Hermes becoming a head in a jar and Amy getting a robot body. Unfortunately for everyone, the guys would return 2 universes later to maintain the poor management the company was used to in the first universe. Futurama is now set in the third universe, where all is back to normal.

While having changed crew on several occasions, it has stayed fairly steady since the year 3000, when the majority of the current crew joined. Amy Wong has stayed with the company since 2998, Scruffy has stayed since 2995, and Dr. John A. Zoidberg has stayed since 2992.

CEO
Although Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth founded the company, and still runs it in 3011, it has at times changed owner for minor periods of time.

Cubert and Dwight took over the business when they inherited it due to the Professor having at one time been declared dead, during which reign it was renamed "Awesome Express".

In 3002, Steve Castle was elected CEO and ran the business as "PlanEx", with Fry being the vice president. After Castle's death due to boneitis, Fry gained control of the company and sold it back to the Professor.

In 3007, the Scammer Aliens, lead by Nudar, took over.

In an alternative timeline, in which the Professor disappeared in 3010, Leela took over the company, and managed much better than the Professor ever did 6ACV07.
Deliveries
List of Planet Express deliveries
Even though Planet Express is a delivery company, it hasn't done much deliveries: the recent crew made 100 deliveries in 10 years (that's almost ten par year).

Assets
*Planet Express headquarters
*Planet Express Ship, Intergalactic delivery ship
*Robot 1-X, servant robot

Shares
After it was revealed that Zoidberg owned 51% of the company before selling his shares to Steve Castle, That Guy died of boneitis, which gave Fry control of his shares. So out of Planet Express' 204 084 shares (as of 3003;
*Fry has 114 083 shares (104 083 from Zoidberg's and then That Guy's former shares, and 10 000 that Fry had before)
*Scruffy has 40 000 shares
*Leela has 10 000 shares
*Bender has 10 000 shares
*The Professor has 10 000 shares
*Hermes has 10 000 shares
*Amy has 10 000 shares
*Hattie has 1 share
*Zoidberg although previously owning 51% of the company, now has 0 shares
Therefore, Fry owns 55.9% of Planet Express (overall majority control of company), Scruffy owns 19.6%, Leela, Bender, The Professor, Hermes and Amy each own 4.9% of the company and Hattie owns 0.00049% of the company. It is unknown whether this remains the situation as Hermes seemed quite happy to keep selling shares to anyone since they were worthless, e.g. he sold 51% of the company to Zoidberg for toilet paper. However, Zoidberg would be least affected if Planet Express was to go into financial ruin as he doesn't have any money to lose in the first place and also that he has no shares and therefore no say in the financial running of the company.
