General Information
Turanga Leela is one of the most important employees of Planet Express. She occupies the position of the ship's captain and pilot and therefore is the head of the regular delivery crew consisting of her, Fry and Bender. Her most noticable feature is the fact that she is a cyclops and possesses only one huge eye, plus her natural hair colour is a violent purple. Also her skull is higher than average, probably in order to acommodate the huge eye, although this is hardly noticable because of her impressive hairdo. Apart from that, she is very shapely and can almost pass for normal - until people take a look at her face, that is. Her default clothing consists of big grey boots, black stretchpants and a white tank top. She mostly wears her plentiful hair in a ponytail, but has been seen with other hairdos on special occasions. A further major feature is the Wristlojackimator or, as she usually calls it, "that thing I wear on my wrist", which seems to be a device of multiple uses around the house. On formal occasions and in private she likes to wear tones of blue, red, purple or pink to match her hair colour.

Leela is by far the most competent and responsible crew member of Planet Express. Being captain and pilot of the Planet Express Ship, she frequently has a leading role in the developments, and as she is a very well trained fighter and does not hesitate to use force if necessary, she is useful in a tight corner. It is usually her job to rescue her other crew members from distress, which she has done countless times, especially Fry. Likewise, she stops her co-workers from doing things that are stupid, dangerous or both. She wears a contact lens and a reading monocle, and as she has only one eye, she is denied the benefits of good depth perception and stereoscopic sight.

As a mutant, Leela has a peculiar metabolism different from that of standard humans. Mutagens cannot harm her, and she seems resistant to many poisons, enviromental hazards and illnesses. Her special condition may have helped her fight off the threat by the Baby Space Bee Queen's poison, and it proved instrumental for finding the cure against the common cold that had New New York in its clutches. Also, it might explain why Leela is so fond of sports and well muscled. As a recruit of the Earth forces, she surpassed every other recruit on the training ground, even well-trained males, and has shown extraordinary strength, dexterity and stamina on numerous occasions.

Despite her troubled past, Leela is friendly, smart and self-reliant, yet sometimes impatient and quick to anger. She cares deeply for her friends and loved ones, plus issues she feels she must stand up for, like freedom, the enviroment and cute animals. Yet she does not hesitate to kick some serious ass if she think it necessary or the people on the receiving end deserve it. A definitive liking for withering sarcasm and violence also reside within her, but she nevertheless seems to have developed strong maternal instincts at times. She is engaged in a constant low-intensity feud with Amy Wong, the only other female at Planet Express, who more or less accuses her of not being ladylike enough to be a true woman. But she has a strong sense for cuteness and romantic issues, which make her very female. Leela is almost completely unimpulsive.

Leela is a huge Blernsball and New New York Mets fan, but can't play worth a damn due to her bad depth perception which soon ended her professional career. She seems to have a soft spot for men with creative musical talent, like Shawn and Fry, but she is strongly opposed to any form of sexism. This bad habit regularily arouses her greatly, as several people learned to their disadvantage, including Fnog.

Leela lives alone in a somewhat underfurnished appartment (Appartment 1i) somewhere in the city of New New York. She only shares her lonelyness with her alien pet, Nibbler.

Biography
Turanga Leela was born as the only child of a married couple of mutants in the sewers of New New York, her parents are Turanga Morris and Munda. As Leela is probably the least mutated mutant ever born and looked almost like a normal child, her parents decided that she should not share the fate of her people living in the sewers. They instead chose to give her a life as normal as possible, a "real" life, by giving her up to the Cookieville Minimum Security Orphanarium, although it was a tough decision and they suffered greatly by giving her away. Attached to the basket she was found in was a note in an alien language written by her mother Turanga Munda who has a Ph.D. in exolinguistics, meant to convince the finder of her daughter that she was an alien and thus accepting her into the orphanarium. The plan worked, and Leela was taken in by the head of the orphanarium Warden Vogel.

Leela grew up in the orphanarium unaware of her true roots, believing that she was indeed an alien. She had a hard time there, as she got relentlessly picked on because of her peculiar looks, and was always a lonely outsider. She then wore a monocle and, later, braces. Nevertheless, or maybe because of this, she managed to develop a strong and caring personality. As an outlet for her deep frustration, she let herself be trained in Arcturan Kung Fu to the level of a black-belt by a master of this martial art, Fnog, despite the fact she was suffering from his obvious sexism.

After leaving the orphanarium, she began a career as Fate Assignment Officer at Applied Cryogenics who assigned defrostees to their permanent carreers and provided them with the proper career chips. Then one day a defrostee named Philip J. Fry came along and inspired her to quit her job. Ultimately she ended up being hired by Fry's many-times-great-nephew Hubert Farnsworth as the new captain for his interstellar delivery service, Planet Express. In that position, she also aquired her beloved pet Nibbler who is still with her. She briefly was named Miss Universe by accident, also she was named Orphan of the Year in her old orphanarium. After a lifetime of searching, she learned of her true heritage as a mutant and was finally reunited with her parents. For a short time, she was a professional Blernsball player with the New New York Mets. When she got hold of genuine Miracle cream that temporarily caused super powers in humans, Leela briefly was member of a team of super heroes named The New Justice Team, consisting of her, Fry and Bender. Her secret identity was the super heroine Clobberella.

As a cyclops, Leela has always had difficulties in relationships with others, especially men. Because of this, she is jealous of Amy's constant successes with the opposite sex. All of her romantic engagements so far proved to be short lived. On the list of her past love affairs are: Shawn, Doug, Zapp Brannigan, Adlai Atkins, Chaz, William Shatner and Alcazar. She made the mistake of sleeping with Zapp Brannigan when, for a split second, her common sense was overwhelmed by pity - a deed she has regretted many times, since Zapp has developed an unhealthy obsession for her, and she, in reaction to this, developed an overwhelming hatred for him. Apart from him, the most persistent admirer to date has been Fry - they were even briefly married, but he is frequently rejected by her. Yet he does not give up, and his patience seems to be rewarded - it appears as if in time Leela might cave in to his attempts to win her heart.

Kif Kroker, Zapp's luckless First Officer, also admires her for various reasons. First, because she treated him well during his brief employment at Planet Express, which must have seemed like heaven after Zapp's humiliations, and second because she is the biological parent of his offspring and helped defend them until they reached the safety of the water in the birthing grounds on Amphibios 9.

Family
*Turanga Morris, Father
*Turanga Munda, Mother
*Due to an accident, she has several dozen Amphibian offspring from Kif Kroker, currently living in an immature "tadpole" form in the swamp of the Kroker clan birthing grounds on Amphibios 9. About half of these have only one eye each, like her.

Additional Info
Trivia
*Her name can be interpreted in several ways: it is a spoof of the symphony "Turangalila" by Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992). The term derives from Sanskrit and means, alternately, "Song of Love" and "Hymn to Joy". At the same time, "Leela" sounds exactly like the term for "purple" in several languages, including German and Swedish (lila). A further possibility is that the name is a spoof of the heroine from The Fifth Element, Leeloo - the perfect woman. And last, she might have been inspired by a character from the British Sci-Fi series Doctor Who bearing the same name (Leela).
*The designers kept trying to make Leela's nose smaller, because it was larger than they thought appropriate for a female character, but Matt Groening insisted it stay the larger size.
*Unlike Fry, who is frequently chopped to pieces in the series, Leela tends to lose the use of her senses instead (sight and hearing).
*As Fate Assignment Officer, her code number was 1BDI (or "one beady eye").
*Books read by Leela include "True Stories of Courageous Animals" (Parasites Lost), "A Child's Garden of Space Legends" (Teenage Mutant Leela's Hurdles), "Dances of the ancient Bronx" (Jurassic Bark) and "Great Machete Battles" (Kif Gets Knocked Up a Notch), plus the magazine Nosy Inquirer, headline: Bigfoot turns 80! (The Farnsworth Parabox)
*Tends to snore.
*Always uses lipstick, mostly pink.

*Used to brew her own beer at the orphanarium.
*Can do the Robot Dance like no one else.
*Owns her own harpoon.
*Tends to fill her day with humdrum activities.
*Is camera-shy.
*When her eye is irritated, she uses eye drops.
*Usually prepares her dinners in advance for one month and then freezes them.
*For obvious reasons, no one can give the evil eye quite like her.
*Adept in the use of weaponry like laser guns or machetes.
*Has a good singing voice.
*Used to play the drums.
*Tends to play with her hair when upset or nervous.
*Frequently accused of poor hygiene (sweaty boot rash, etc), but may be at a disadvantage due to her mutant physiology and energetic lifestyle.
*Usually, Leela only wears jewlery on special occasions. The only exception from this was the ring in Space Pilot 3000 that Bender stole, it was never seen again.
*Apart from Fry and Bender, she is the only character that appears in every episode of the show and in every comic.

Leela has been seen with two eyes several times:
*When Aliens Attack — To portray the role of Jenny MacNeil, a plastic eye is taped to the side of her face (which Zoidberg later eats).
*Amazon Women in the Mood — When the Amazonians are approaching, a puddle ripples, causing Leela's reflection to distort, showing her briefly with two eyes.

Fry, Leela, and Bender are sent on a mission to deliver glass cleaner to the city Glassopolis. The city is a small glass bottle inhabited by small humans. Using the Shrinky Dinky Fun Slide, the crew shrinks down small enough to enter the city.
While they’re in the city they attend the Great Recycling ceremony. In the ceremony, people that have turned thirty are put into an area and eventually a garbage disposal for population control. After it is learned that Fry and Leela are thirty, they are forced into the arena.

Act II
While Bender is showing the movie Logan’s Run, the crew knocks Glassopolis off the table, and onto the floor. Amy slips on the bottle, and it rolls into the street. After the chaos, the city is destroyed and the Glassopolians must find a new place to live. Since the size of the people on Earth is too dangerous, they decide to use their doomsday devices to destroy Earth. Will Fry, Leela, and Bender save the Earth again!?
Act I
The weather on Earth is not acting normal, and it is soon discovered that it is Professor Farnsworth's fault...and some of it being Bender's. Bender sold an inner-Earth vehicle of Farnsworth's to an alien race called the Magmoids, who have used it to drill to Earth's core and steal it's magma. Farnsworth calculates that it will soon cause Earth to explode. He sends Fry, Bender, and Leela into the core using a copy of his craft. While Fry and Leela are asleep, Bender stops the craft and steals hundreds of diamonds from a secret layer well under the surface.

Act II
Leela takes Benders diamonds (however, he later stuffs them in his chest). As they get closer to the magnetic center of Earth (as well as the core), Bender's inhibition unit malfunctions, so Fry has to strap him to the wall so he doesn't get hurt. They suddenly break through, into the core, where they find the Magmoids. However, the aliens imprison Fry and Leela as they steal the last part of the core. Bender, still malfunctioning, breaks free of the straps and goes out of the ship. His chest opens, blinding the Magmoids with the light shining off the diamonds. Fry and Leela break free, use gamma prods to melt the Magmoids, therefore replenishing the core, before escaping knowing they saved Earth. Later, Professor Farnsworth is fined for putting Earth in danger. He uses Bender's diamonds to pay off his fine.

Act I
Bender has signed up for a course in alien weapons repair, and the school sends him a new weapon each week to repair. Meanwhile Leela is depressed that she won't be able to find a man and eventually gives up on dating. Bender attempts to use a time rifle on the Professor but it malfunctions and explodes, splitting Leela into her baby, teenage, elderly and modern years. Leela has to look after them all to avoid changing her past and future, but it turns out to be too hard, such as teenage Leela getting a nose ring which causes modern Leela to get one as well.

Act II
Modern Leela decides to walk around in her bathing suit since Teenage Leela threatened to get a tattoo (so if the teenager gets one, Leela will know straight away). One day, Fry and Teenage Leela go out for a meal in a cafe, where Teenage Leela says she has a crush on Fry. They receive a call from Professor Farnsworth, telling them the space/time continuum has ripped, causing younger and older versions of themselves to appear at Planet Express. The Professor is too scared to try and fix Bender's gun to send the alternate reality versions back to their own times. Elderly Leela makes out to the Professor, in hope of giving him some inspiration to fix the gun. It does, and all of the other versions of the crew are sent back to their own time. Bender receives a new gun to repair, which has the power to end the world at the press of a button. Bender accidentally drops the gun, causing it to activate, to which we are submitted a plain black panel which reads "THE END" in white writing.
Act I
Bender and Fry are playing in the holo-shed, imagining that they are saving Ed Sullivan's head from four insects called The Beetles. Leela interrupts, claiming they are under attack by a group of four flies. While trying to defeat the flies (who want in on Planet Express' shipment of manure), they damage all their working thrusters and are soon plummeting towards a class M planet. When they crash, they are invited to a peasant's house for supper. While there, the tax collector arrives and tries to take all their money. Leela scares him off, however, since it means the peasant's lives are now in danger, they must leave. While walking aimlessly around the planet, Bender decides to take up pickpocketting, and after a twist of fate in which the peasants get their tax money back, he becomes known as Robot Robin Hood.

Act II
Leela tells Bender she needs some new parts to repair the ship so that they can fly back to Earth. Bender takes Leela and Fry to the Sherrif of Bot-tingham's castle that night, where they find money as well as the parts they need for the ship. The Sherrif arrives and finds his possessions missing. Upon discovering a bow and arrow Bender left behind, he starts an archery contest in hope of capturing Robot Robin Hood there. At the competition, Bender replaces himself with the real Robin Hood, however, Bender and his gang are still captured. Just as they are sentenced to death, King Richard the Linux-Hearted arrives and tells the Sherrif to pardon their lives. King Richard then holds a feast in their honor.
Act I
Bender is playing poker at the Planet Express workbench, and since Fry is asleep, Bender decides to take advantage of him, and soon Fry is broke. Leela confronts Bender and tells him not to take advantage of Fry, so Bender then builds a robot out of the What If? machine so that he can have a poker buddy. Fry wakes up, and unawares asks What If? question (What if it were Xmas every day?). The What If? machine reveals his programming forces him to reveal the answer, and then we are shown what it would be like if it were Xmas every day...Nixon makes a deal with Robot Santa so that he can be head of weapons if it is Xmas every day. Soon, everyone on Earth is enslaved into Santa's army. Leela gets the Professor to build a giant Easter Rabbit robot, and soon they (as well as Amy, thanks to her clumsiness) destroy Santa.

Act II
Leela decides to ask the next question, but Bender, being selfish, asks the machine "What if we skip Leela's question?". Fry decides to ask the final question, so he asks "What if life were like a sitcom?". In a parody of "I Dream of Jeannie", Fry discovers a bottle containing a genie named Leela. He takes Leela home, where that night, she goes on a date. Fry doesn't want to be left alone, so he organizes a date with a witch named Amantha [Amy] (a parody of Samantha from "Bewitched"). Amantha and Leela soon have a fight, to which Fry becomes happy, since he's never had two girls fight over him before. Suddenly, the Professor arrives and tells Bender that the What If? machine has been using it's software to cheat at poker, to which Bender says he installed an empathy chip so the robot would feel bad. However, the Professor then goes on to say it was really a self-destruct chip, and instantly the What If? machine blows up.
Act I
Fry and Bender get Frank Miller to sign Fry’s copy of Space Boy, a comic which he read as a kid. While there he discovers that there are auditions for a Space Boy movie and Fry wants the role of Space Boy. Fry manages to impress Marty the director and he is hired for the job and Bender is hired as Calculon’s buffer for his nude scenes. Leela however, is concerned that Fry will become a movie star and not work at Planet Express anymore. Fry then gets a contract to sign which Leela is suspicious about since it is written in an alien language, though Fry gets her and Amy a job in the movie. Fry only gets a few pages of script instead of the entire thing which Marty says he wants to keep it more real. During filming Calculon is replaced by a look-alike for a fight scene which turns into a giant, deadly robot.

Act II
Fry gets pulverised by the robot and realises that the acting will be bad for his health. Leela exchanges Monopoly money to Raoul so she can get the alien language on the script translated. Fry is filming a scene with a brain slug on his head and Leela takes him to his trailer to tell him that he will die at the end of the film which is why the script is given in parts and if Fry quits he will be locked in a room and be forced to watch Glitter on a continuous loop until he dies or goes insane. The only other option is to get fired but that backfires as Fry accidentally acts like a real movie star which thrills Marty. Fry is about to be killed the next day and Zoidberg gets hold of the script. Fry is about to be killed when Moon Woman comes to save him and turns out to be Leela. However it only makes things worse and they are about to both be killed. Filming then has to stop since the ending was supposed to be secret but it is now posted all over the internet by Zoidberg. The film makers then decide to make a live action version of The Simpsons and Bender plans to sell objects used by famous people.
Act I
Fry and Bender get Frank Miller to sign Fry’s copy of Space Boy, a comic which he read as a kid.
