Fry and Leela's romantic vacation goes disturbingly wrong.

Story
Act I: "Why is it so impossible for two people to be completely alone?"
At the end of the day at Planet Express, the crew take their leave of each other in the locker room. Fry and Leela make a big show of seeming to go their separate ways, but after everyone else is gone, the two emerge from hiding places and attempt to begin a romantic evening together. Interrupted by Scruffy, they realize that they can't really be alone here, so they leave. They share a nice walk in a deserted part of Central Park until Bender attempts to mug them. They beat him up and steal all of his mugging loot. Unable to have a night out completely alone, they settle for a quiet table at Elzar's restaurant. Here, Zoidberg, at his second job as a busboy, begins clearing their table in the middle of their meal. Even at Leela's home they can't quite be alone, as they are self-conscious about Nibbler. When Leela complains about the impossibility of being alone, a targeted advertisement appears on her wristlojackimator. The ad promotes Casa Isolada Eco Resort, a resort that caters to only one couple at a time and is devoid of other people. The ad announces a discount for Leela because she would be a repeat customer. Fry becomes jealous at this news, and Leela admits that she had visited once with Sean.

The next day, the other crewmembers are loading the ship with tiny cars for a delivery to Simian 7, "the planet of the apes", where humans are strictly forbidden. Fry and Leela enter and announce that they are taking a week off. Farnsworth initially objects, but Fry reminds him that they are humans, so he allows them to leave. Being left shorthanded, Farnsworth instructs Amy to participate in the delivery disguised in her marmoset pajamas.

At Casa Isolada, Fry and Leela enjoy a very nice day together and are swimming naked when Leela's old boyfriend Sean inexplicably appears. To the horror of both Fry and Leela, Sean strips down and jumps into the pool with them.

Act II: "Fry and Leela are in a zoo!"
While everyone puts their clothes back on, Sean explains that he is here on vacation, availing himself of the repeat-customer discount. He is here due only to bad fortune; his vacation had come to an end, but the homeward shuttle is "under repair". Fry's jealousy, already at a fever pitch due to Sean's physical presence here, is further aroused when Leela accepts Sean's invitation to go to the resort's bar and catch up. Leela and Sean catch up fairly quickly, but then Sean plays his saxophone for her until she is quite bored and Fry is quite drunk and angry. Fry interrupts them and picks a fight with Sean. Sean's wife, Darlene, interrupts the fight to announce that the shuttle is repaired. She and Sean depart immediately to avoid any extra resort fees.

On Simian 7, the delivery complete, Amy and Guenter the monkey recognize each other. Guenter promises not to give away Amy's secret. In fact, Guenter takes Bender, Amy, and Zoidberg on a tour of his city, leading them finally to the City Zoo, where he explains that the zoo's policy of compassion leads to the animals not even knowing that they're in captivity. The point is driven home when they arrive at the human exhibit, where they find Fry and Leela enjoying their "secluded" vacation, unwittingly on public display on Simian 7. The arrival of the tour group coincides with the moment at which Fry and Leela make up and begin their vacation in earnest.

Act III: "You were in a zoo!"
Guenter and the others believe that their friends are being held against their will. They visit the zoo director, who turns out to be Banjo the orangutan, to plead for their release. Banjo explains that not only are they not being held, but they actually paid to be there, as the human exhibit and Casa Isolada are one and the same. It is a popular exhibit, as different couples have visited for years. Banjo explains that when Sean and his current wife visited, the zoo decided to conduct a behavioral experiment: "strand" Sean and Darlene, entice Fry and Leela to visit, and observe. Guenter is satisfied at the news that Fry and Leela are here voluntarily, but the Planet Express crew are not. They worry about Fry and Leela being embarrassed. Banjo helps them to cool their fervor by showing them video of Fry and Leela complaining about and mocking each one of them in turn. Banjo finally reveals his knowledge that Amy is a human, and sounds the alarm. Fleeing, the crew resolve to rescue Fry and Leela in spite of being offended. On the threshold of success, they are swallowed whole by a moon worm and must wait a week to pass through its digestive tract. They emerge somewhat worse for the wear to find Fry and Leela just leaving, unaware of their presence, having spent a week on display.

Back home, Fry and Leela tell the others about their vacation, oblivious to everything that happened outside their enclosure. Bender wants to humiliate them by revealing the truth, but Amy and Zoidberg remain strong, urging him to keep the secret. When Fry and Leela loudly and mockingly revisit their own secrets about the others, Amy changes her mind and advises Bender, "Let 'er rip."
Bender wants to take a photo of an actor whose face has never been seen so he joins the paparazzi.

Plot
Act I: "Picture time! Everybody get together!"
After watching an episode of All My Circuits, Amy suggests that the crew take a trip to the aquarium. While there, Bender shows his liking for photography, and mentions that he is the last photographer on Earth to use Photographic film. After discovering Calculon is at the aquarium, Bender follows him around and harasses him by taking photos of him, to the point where Calculon leaves out of frustration. Back at Planet Express headquarters, Bender shows off his photos to Leela and Zoidberg, but is disappointed with the ones of Calculon. However, Zoidberg is impressed with them, and suggests that Bender go to Hollywood and take them to the offices of Us People magazine. Bender does so, and the managing editor of the magazine, Larvae Levin, is pleased enough with the photos that he offers Bender a job as a paparazzo.

Act II: "I'd like to introduce you to Bender, the newest member of our paparazzo family."
Bender is successful at getting many front page images for the magazine. Later, Zoidberg shows him a documentary about the greatest actor in the universe, Langdon Cobb, a man who believes he should be admired for his acting and not for his looks, and therefore always wears a brown paper bag on his head. The documentary states that no one has ever taken a photo of Cobb's true appearance, which inspires Bender to take one.

While breaking into Cobb's compound, Bender is chased by an unusual mushroom dog, but escapes it and manages to take a picture of Cobb by hiding in his fireplace. Cobb begs Bender to never show the image to anyone, and Bender agrees. However, he immediately takes the picture to Fry; when Fry sees it, a green light bursts from his eyes and mouth and his body is reduced to a shell. Curious, Bender shows the image to Amy and Hermes, too, and finds that it has the same effect. He realises that the image of Langdon has this effect on all living creatures. The Professor recognizes the symptoms and identifies the cause; Langdon Cobb is an alien from Bryoria 6, an organism with two bodies linked by quantum entanglement; the actor is the Id of the creature, and the unusual fungus animal that chased Bender is the ego, which feeds off of attention. Any living creature that looks on the Id's face will have its life force sucked out to feed the ego. In order to rescue their friends, they must weaken Cobb's ego so that they can attack it and free the victims' life forces. Zoidberg suggests that they could do this by taking advantage of an upcoming acting competition between Cobb and Calculon; if they can ensure that Calculon wins, Cobb should be weakened. Leela and Bender present their plan to Calculon while Zoidberg and the Professor break into Cobb's compound to be ready to attack the ego when it weakens. Calculon agrees to their plan out of a desire to outshine Cobb, and performs the final death scene of Romeo and Juliet; to ensure a strong performance, he decides to drink real poison and die on stage.

Act III: "There's a humongous fungus among us!"
Calculon delivers a moving performance and goes through with his plan to drink the poison. However, Cobb is still declared the winner of the competition, and his ego only becomes stronger. It attacks the theatre where the competition is taking place. Bender theorizes that if he shows Cobb the picture of himself, it will suck out his life force; to do so, he must manually develop the film in the dark room in his torso. While Bender takes his time to develop the photo perfectly, Cobb explains to the others that, rather than sucking out life forces as the other members of his species do, he has been sustaining himself by milking the admiration that the people of Earth have for actors. By the time Bender develops the photo properly, Leela, Zoidberg and the Professor have had their life forces sucked out as well. Unfortunately, Cobb cannot be hurt by the photo; however, his admiration of its quality inflates his ego to the point that it bursts, releasing the absorbed life forces of all of his victims and restoring them to full health.

Act II: "I'd like to introduce you to Bender! The newest member of our paparazzo family!"

Biography
Petunia went on a date with Fry when Bender's dating service set them up 2ACV07. However, she was more interested in Sal, even though he was on a date with Leela, also thanks to Bender. She was later offered 5 dollars by Sal in exchange of sexual favours, but nothing happened 6ACV02. Petunia also led Santa into a trap on Xmas 3ACV03, attended the 1074th Academy Awards with Zapp 3ACV08 and Fry's non-canonical funeral with some of [[Philip J. Bender becomes a folksinger after being broken, and starts touring with Beck.

The Story
plot-update

Act I: "This thing can't go faster than 80,000 miles per hour?"
While walking, Fry and Bender come across the NNY Hole Project. Fry gets a recently excavated Volkswagen Transporter microbus that he pushes back to Planet Express. Though petroleum no longer exists, a can of whale oil is supplied. Bender starts to open it with the can opener, but he is caught by the magnetic forces and is horribly damaged. at the hospital, Bender learns that his hydraulics are ruined, he can never move again. While wallowing in his misery, he notices Beck, his favourite folk singer. Beck invites Bender to be his new washboard player, giving him robotic mini-arms, which allow him to play by scraping them across his broken chest.

Act II: "My shell ran."
Bender and Beck go on tour, with Fry, Leela, Amy and Zoidberg following them in the microbus. While at a laundromat, Zoidberg's shell runs, ruining their money. Beck and Bender organize a benefit for broken robots and Bender starts writing his own song. After he finishes writing his song, he is visited by Fry and the rest; they are shocked to find he is capable of moving again.

Act III: "I didn't get my beads!"
Bender is wondering how he can play at his upcoming concert, Bend-Aid and thinks of something... by faking still being injured. At his concert, Bender sings with Beck, while the others make money by selling "love beads", pearls coughed up by Dr. Zoidberg. Bender receives a giant check before singing the song he wrote, "My Broken Friend", and right before he finishes his song, his secret is exposed as he gets too cocky and starts to dance. Bender escapes his former fans rushing the stage, lands in the VW, and drives off with the others. Beck and Co. give chase in the tour bus.

Act IV: "Put the metal to the pedal to the other metal!"
Bender and the rest start driving through town, trying to outrun Beck and his minions. The VW falls off the Golden Gate Bridge, because it is now a hover bridge (no span) and they aren't in a hovercar. Bender grabs a cable and manages to save himself and as the others hold onto him, slow the van's drop. Once safe, Leela releases her grip of Bender (making Fry and Amy lose theirs), causing him to be slingshot into the air. He lands near Beck's bus, where Beck recovers the huge check, but spares Bender. With a magnet placed on his head, singing "Bender is Great", Bender returns to the crew, who are paddling home by using the bus as a raft.
* According to the DVD commentary, the part where Fry holds up a bong after the Professor asks, "Where's the device that can slow down and speed up time?" was not asked to be edited by the FOX censors because the bong was referred to in the script as a "weird bottle."
*Cedars-Sinewave Hospital is a play off of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
*Non-speaking appearances are made by the heads of Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, on Beck's tourbus.
*Bender's music, as shown on the sheet music (approx 11:07), is actually the melody of the first movement of Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 (Beethoven).
*In this episode we learn the 4th millennium's names for many of the States of America:
**New York → New New York
**New Jersey → New New Jersey
**Pennsylvania → Sylvania and the Penn Republic
***An allusion to the splitting of Czechoslovakia.
**Virginia → East West Virginia
***West Virginia's name remained unchanged.
**Washington D.C. → Washington Alternating current
**Ohio → eHIO
***Possibly a pun on eBay.
**Kentucky → 'Ucky
**Montana → Muontana
**Washington → Tron
**Wyoming → Ohm
**Colorado → Truecolorado
**Idaho → User ID:aho
**Oregon → XORegon
**Nevada → Nukevada
**Utah → Human Farm
***The name is written, perhaps officially, in AL1.
**California → HighCal and LoCal

Continuity
*The broken robots shown throughout the episode include:
**Oily, from "Mars University".
**A Humorbot, though presumably not Humorbot 5.0, who appears fully functioning in earlier and later episodes.
**Malfunctioning Eddie.
**The headless Robot Chef, who we see explode in "A Fishful of Dollars".
*The drummer in Beck's band is a Neptunian.

Allusions
*Bender eats some Olestra chips from the 1990s and suffers the usual side effects of the product.
*Patchcord Adams is a spoof of Robin Williams' portrayal of real-life medical doctor Patch Adams in the movie bearing his name.
*The name "Bend-Aid" is a reference to the line of adhesive bandages Band-Aid, later alluded to in "Stench and Stenchibility", as "Band-Ape".
*The broken robots that "bum rush" the stage reenact a scene from the movie Freaks.
*Cylon and Garfunkel are the 31st century equivalent of Simon and Garfunkel. They sing the latter's "Scarborough Fair".

Goofs
*Issues come up involving the state names, which were presumably only thought up for this episode, as they are not used at any other point in the series.
**In "A Head in the Polls", Washington D.C. is not called "Washington A.C.".
**In "The 30% Iron Chef", Bender references Eugene, "Oregon", differing from "XORegon".
**New Jersey is not called "New New Jersey" in any other episode.
