"War Is the H-Word" is the thirtieth episode of Futurama, the seventeenth of the second production season and the second of the third broadcast season. It aired 26 November, 2000 on FOX. It guest stars Todd Susman as the speaker at the DOOP camp. Fry and Bender are enrolled into the army and are forced into a battle against the Spheroids.

The Story
Act I: "War were declared"
Fry and Bender are visiting a 7¹¹ where they see an army sergeant get a 5% military discount, which they do not get as they are not in the military. So they both sign up in order to get the discount and then immediately quit the army, which is unfortunately thwarted by the outbreak of war - they are stuck in the army. The crew accompany them to South Street Spaceport where the Nimbus under the command of Zapp Brannigan is made ready for the expedition. Leela wants to enlist, but Zapp refuses as the military has a strict men-only policy. The ship leaves for Spheron 1, the target of the operation, although no specific reason for the conflict becomes apparent. While the recruits go through their training, one is surpassing all the others: a purple-haired and purple-bearded man who always wears goggles, known as Lee Lemon. Zapp is instantly interested in him for reasons unclear to himself. The Nimbus reaches its destination, and the soldiers are unloaded onto the surface.

Act II: "The enemy - they're balls!"
It turns out that the enemy are enormous crowds of living balls who attack the Earthican troops by bouncing up and down on them. The soldiers defend themselves and inflict casualties with the enemy, Fry excels by an act of cowardice through which they are overrun. As a bomb is rolling into the Earthican lines, Bender throws himself onto the bomb so it detonates harmlessly inside his chest cabinet. The wounded are brought to a field hospital that has an air of M*A*S*H around it, Zoidberg is part of the surgical team and having his differences with iHawk. Zapp Brannigan makes Fry Kif's assistant for his cowardice. Meanwhile Bender is not too well, but Richard Nixon's head orders him fixed as he has some plans with him. Once Bender is whole again, he is sent on a mission of peace to the enemy leaders, the Brain Balls, and with him goes Earth's top peace negotiator, Henry Kissinger's Head. However, in the shower Fry and Lee Lemon overhear Zapp and Nixon planning to blow up the whole planet with a bomb hidden inside Bender, whic is activated by Zapp with a remote control as Bender and Kissinger are already negotiating with the Brain Balls.

Act III: "Make Bender happy or he blows up the planet!"
The Earth troops are preparing to leave the planet, but Lee Lemon wants to know when the bomb will explode. It turns out it is voice-activated, and will trigger when Bender says the word that is on the first place of his Top Ten of most-used words: ASS. Lee Lemon and Fry steal a chopper to save Bender, but Zapp Brannigan tries to stop them. Lemon beats him up (giving him a black eye) and reveals himself to be Leela. She pilots the stolen chopper to the place of the negotiations, where she pushes Fry out of the vehicle so he can land and save Bender. Fry is just in time to prevent Bender from saying the A-word so he won't blow them all to the H-word. Bender promptly uses the new situation to put the screws on the Brain Balls, who give in to Earths demands in order to prevent Bender from blowing up the whole planet. The balls leave Spheron 1, the war is over. Back at Planet Express, the Professor and Zoidberg are unable to remove the bomb, so they reset the word that triggers it - a word from the list of words Bender almost never uses. Bender is curious to know what word it is, but the crew think it is better if he doesn't know. Bender, however, is now set on finding out the word, and as he finds it, the bomb goes off.
Trivia
*The episode’s original east coast airing was interrupted by a special news bulletin. Unfortunately, the interruption came a minute before the very end of the episode, right before the audience was to learn Bender’s fate after supposedly triggering the bomb on Earth.
*'Bender’s Top Ten Most Frequently Uttered Words’ in full:
**10. 'Chump'
**9. 'Chumpette'
**8. 'Yours'
**7. 'Up'
**6. 'Pimpmobile'
**5. 'Bite'
**4. 'My'
**3. 'Shiny'
**2. 'Daffodil'
**1. 'Ass'
*Bender says every one of these words at least once in the episode.
*Bender believes his least frequently uttered words to be:
**8.'Please'
**7.'Thanks'
**6.'Sorry'
**5.'Funderful'
**4.'Non-alcoholic'
**3.'Compassion'
**2.'Shrimp-Toast'
**1.'Antiquing'

*At the end, Bender says “I’m all right,” but the captions say “Hootenanny?”. The Region 2 DVD shows the correct words.
*At the beginning of the episode, Fry is shown looking at these gum brands, contemplating which to buy:
**Spider Yum ( A reference to the urban legend that Bubble Yum brand gum contained spider eggs
**Hubble Bubble (A cross reference between the Hubble Telescope and Dubble Bubble Gum, plus a possible reference to Hubba Bubba)
**Liquid Nitrogum (A parody on Liquid nitrogen)
**Big Pink (A parody on Big Red ) - Fry chooses this because it is the only gum with the breath freshening power of ham. And according to Bender it "pinkens your teeth while you chew."
**Oozy F___ (A parody of Juicy Fruit)
*This is the second episode in which the words "ding dong" is mentioned in the same room as Nixon, the first being "A Head in the Polls".
*The recruiting poster outside the recruitment centre says "Join the Army - What are you, chicken? Buk buk buk". Inside we see a poster of a flag-draped coffin labeled "Employee of the Month".
*The army's men-only policy is accentuated by propaganda posters, slogan Round hips sink ships - a reference to World War II posters saying Loose lips sink ships warning against possible German agents.
*On the hull of the Nimbus a poster says "Buy bonds - sell stocks".
*Outside the Officer's club stands a sign that reads "We don't know but we've been told our beer on tap is mighty cold". A parody of common military cadence calls that begin, "I don't know, but I've been told..." In addition, this may be a direct parody of a cadence call from the film "Full Metal Jacket" that goes "I don't know, but I've been told Eskimo p***y is mighty cold."
*The Earthicans used positron shooters against the brains.
*A sign outside the shop Fry and Bender are in at the start of the episode reads "Free bag of Ice-9 with 6-pack", a reference to the substance Ice-9, created by Kurt Vonnegut in his novel Cat’s Cradle.
*Zapp Brannigan briefs the troops in front of a large Earthican flag, a parody of the opening scene of the movie Patton.
*Zapp Brannigan tells Kif to send in a quip to Humor in Uniform, a regular article in "Reader's Digest"
*The Piñata Lightsaber scene parodies the scene where Obi-Wan Kenobi trains Luke Skywalker in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.
**This clip was also featured in "The Birth of the Lightsaber" featurette on the 25 anniversary trilogy DVD.
*Bender is treated by a robot doctor named iHawk — a parody of Alan Alda’s Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce (voiced by actor/impersonator Maurice LaMarche), and the Apple line of iProducts. At one point, the robot flips a switch from “irreverent” to “maudlin,” a reference to the duality of Alda’s character portrayal. Additionally, Todd Susman provides the voice of the P.A. announcer as he did in M*A*S*H.
*An extended M*A*S*H joke is played in the episode when Bender is evacuated to a mobile hospital. A “Suicide Is Painless” soundalike appears in the score, and many of the ensuing jokes are in M*A*S*H style. The alienese on the tent says *M*E*A*T, hence “mash meat.” Also, the first time that iHawk and Dr. Zoidberg in the tent it's a parody of Hawkeye fighting with Major Frank Burns, with Zoidberg as Frank, the unnamed nurse as Major Margaret Houlihan, and iHawk as Hawkeye.
*Bender’s Top Ten Used Words list is a reference to David Letterman’s Top Ten.
*There are numerous references to the ball aliens as testicles: “These balls are making me testy!”; Brannigan is referring to the “Brain Balls” as having a lot of brains, and a lot of chutzpa (which he says while cupping his hand and raising it); the formerly mentioned newspaper headline, “Balls Thoroughly Licked”; and the plea for peace by Kissinger that "we have all seen too many body bags and ball sacks," are a few.
*The war on Spheron 1 and the equipment of the Earthican troops seems to be inspired by the movie Starship Troopers. Additionally, the Brain Balls are analogous to the Brain Bugs of Starship Troopers.
The Last Dark One is the last of the Desert Muck Leech species, as well all the species that were considered to be Dark Ones. It originally lived in a puddle on Mars, but it was taken out of its habitat and the rest of its species were wiped out by Leo Wong to make room for a parking lot in the second Mars Vegas. Turanga Leela kept it as a pet, and it later became the mascot for the Feministas. Leela allowed the last Dark One to survive on her blood until the Feministas were sent to Maxi-Padlock, a women's prison, where it was used at a breakout attempt by eating a hole through the wall. The breakout failed, but they were rescued by Bender.

It was taken to the Violet Dwarf Star Implosion where it revealed itself to be the last Dark One, after taking a hit from the Omega Device. It managed to kill Hutch Waterfall before getting killed by The Last Encyclopod. Its corpse was eaten by Zoidberg before the Encyclopod had a chance to preserve its DNA, thus making it the very last of its species and the last casualty of the Arms Race of Evolution.

The audience scene near the end of Into the Wild Green Yonder is famous in its undertaken of the creators trying to insert all adult characters which had made an appearance on the show so far.

Production
David X. Cohen began hinting at the scene in interviews prior to the film's release. While its intention may not be entirely obvious, it may simply boil down to being a 'cool' thing to do, if this was indeed the last Futurama they ever did. Due to the excessive amount of characters appearing in one picture, and each requiring individual drawing (since they could not simply be inserted with the "people hose"), the animation company, Rough Draft Studios, had to fine the production company, The Curiosity Company, for the extra time it had to take.

However, despite its intention to include every character on the show, the scene has short comings in order to remain within canon. Characters from Fry's past and indeed everyone in the 20th and 21st century do not appear, but due to a comment by Morbo, neither do any of the children throughout the show's run.
Bender Bending Rodríguez (Model: Bending Unit 22) is a bending unit, who works at Planet Express as Assistant Manager of Sales, formerly chef of the company. He is one of the primary characters and is known for his "in-your-face interface".

Biography
Early years
Bender Bending Rodríguez was built in Tijuana, Mexico in 2998 by Mom's Friendly Robot Company. There is some speculation about what happened in the following two years, except few things are certain, he briefly studied Bending at Bending State University, though he also graduated from the facility he was built in.

He soon got a job bending girders, but after realizing that the purpose of the girders he bent were for suicide booths, he figured that his purpose was meaningless and thus decided to kill himself in one of the suicide booths he had helped construct.

You really want a robot for a friend?
Season 1
While waiting in line to kill himself on 31 December, 2999, Fry, who was clearly not familiar with suicide booths, stood in front of him, thinking it was a phone booth. Bender helped him along. But they managed to get out of the suicide booth alive. Bender soon learns that Fry is from the 20th Century and had been frozen for a thousand years.

But since Fry refused to get assigned to his job, Leela was on his tail. Bender helped him escape through the Head Museum and soon down to Old New York below New New York. Here Leela finally caught up with them and agreed to help Fry. Bender decided to stay with them and they headed over to Fry's nephew, Professor Farnsworth. Farnsworth soon offered them jobs, and luckily for them, he had the proper career chips.

Farnworth's asset
As an employee at Planet Express he continued his kleptomania, drinking and smoking. He convinced Fry to move in with him and soon Hermes Conrad forced him to actually do something around the company. He got assigned as chef of the company, one of his dreams was apparently to cook, but having no sense of taste made vile meals for the staff.

Bender got into trouble when he began abusing electricity (jacking on), and his friends were not in favor of it. Saddened by their discontent, he sought new opportunities in religion. He joined Robotology, but this just made him a lot more annoying to his friends. So they decided to make him sin to become his regular self again, and during a visit to Robot Hell and the Robot Devil, Fry and Leela managed to save him.

Bender himself never found true love, and one of the few close fembots he knew got sucked into a black hole after Zapp Brannigan had crashed the Titanic into it. But his personality continued to be a problem for his friends, and Leela became very upset with him when he flushed Nibbler down the toilet. The Professor "carefully" implanted an empathy chip in Bender, which forced him to feel Leela's every emotion for a short while.

The lesser of two evils
Season 2
During a visit to Past-O-Rama they bumped into Flexo, another Bending Unit, possibly also of the same model number (22). Flexo and Bender became good friends, but Fry feared that Flexo is evil, and in a mix up at the Miss Universe contest Flexo was arrested for Bender's attempt to steal the tiara.

Bender briefly joined the Robot Mafia and fought in the Ultimate Robot Fighting League until his popularity slipped and he was rigged out of the league. Together with his fellow robots he rebelled against humanity.

Well - I'm rich
Bender's Uncle Vladimir died and Bender was to inherit his castle. He asked the crew to stay there for one night and they agreed to it. Bender was not at all comfortable in his new castle and the start up sound of Windows 98 was not helping either.

While being chased by several hologram ghosts, he fled out in the yard where he was run over by a were-car. The collision caused a virus to be beamed into him and he became a were-car. Bender did not realize this until later, but the Gypsy told them the only way to get rid of the virus would be destroy the original were-car. So through a long journey they found the original were-car and destroyed it, and thus Bender was free of the virus.

Whether he kept the castle or not is unknown.

When I'm found in a thousand years, they will know what the score was
Season 3
Bender continued his life with many adventures together with Fry and Leela. He temporarily worked for Calculon as his water heater. He met up with Flexo again, but this time he was not happy to see him, because Bender figured that his second true love was still in love with Flexo. Bender screwed it up and the divorcees got back together.

He was briefly sent to an institute for insane robots, got to tour around with Beck and fulfil his dream of becoming a folk-singer, became Pharaoh of an entire planet and beat Elzar on the television show Iron Cook.

During a battle with Space Pirates Bender got shot out through the torpedo slot and was forced to drift through space. He for some time became the God of the Shrimpkins which was a life form that had grown on his stomach. But after they all died out, Bender met up with the Galactic Entity who he believes is God. And the Entity sent Bender back to Earth.

[I] should not be allowed on TV!
Season 4
Bender was still wanting his fame, he found interest in becoming the new Antonio on All My Circuits. He got the job. But Calculon was hardly impressed by Bender's performance, however the Network executives disagreed. So Bender got to continue on the show, but in his true nature.

But when Bender realized that his behaviour on TV causes Dwight and Cubert to steal his stuff, he called off the show.

Bender joined Fry and Leela briefly as they gained super powers in the New Justice Team, he has had an affair with the Planet Express Ship, he got modeled into a fembot and had a relationship shortly with Calculon and helped Robot Santa as a replacement.

Dumb dumb away!
Bender's Big Score
But the company got into trouble when the Box Network canceled its license, and for two years they were not able to deliver packages. Luckily though, their license was renewed and they went back in business.

Bender became the centre of attention as the new masters of the company lead by Nudar infected him with an iObey virus and they forced him to go back in time and steal all of Earth's valuables. But when Fry managed to escape back into the past, they send him after Fry to kill him, and after 12 years tireless hunting, he managed to do so.

But he soon learnt that the Fry he killed was doomed anyway because he was a time paradox duplicate. But after being stranded on Neptune for a while, humanity and he decided to fight back, and after with the help of Hermes the war was won, he revealed that he himself had kept the Spheroboom that the scammers had told him to keep safe, thus saving the day.

However, while on a trip back in time to make sense out of everything that had happened that year, a mishap led to him accidentally tearing the universe open.

Death to humans...
The Beast with a Billion Backs
After becoming an official stalker for Calculon by Calculon, Bender fell into a deep depression after Calculon informed him that there was no such thing as the League of Robots, a society of robots which came to the aid of robots abused by humans, and which Bender had worshipped for his entire life. He contemplated commiting suicide until he was approached by the League led by Calculon himself; he lied about its non-existence to ensure its secrecy.

Bender became the newest member of the League and began to personally enforce the no-humans policy of the organization, becoming very famous within it. However, Bender was caught helping his human friends and his bluffs were called by Calculon, whom Bender challenged to a duel. Bender broke the rules of the duel, severely injuring Calculon and nearly exposing the League, but instead of being kicked out of the League, Calculon resigned his position as President and gave it to Bender.

Bender organized the Army of the Damned (trading his firstborn son to the Robot Devil for it) to take over the world, only to discover that its entire population was already leaving to live on the body of a giant tentacled monster named Yivo. Bender soon received a letter from Fry describing how wonderful life was there, but Bender ended up interfering by attacking Yivo and attempting to bring humanity back. Soon, for personal reasons, Yivo unwittingly complied with Bender and had everybody return to Earth.

I know not of this Bender
Bender's Game
Bender finds himself attempting to catch up with a game of Dungeons and Dragons, played by Cubert Farnsworth and his friends. He soon hits the obstacle of realising he has no imagination. But the more he tries, he eventually believes he is Titanius Anglesmith, Fancy Man of Cornwood.

Unfortunately, his imagination grows wild, and he is sent to HAL Institute to be cured. The therapy is unsuccessful and they decide to give him a lobotomy. But during the operation, the dark matter crystals becomes close enough, allowing Bender's imagination to become real.

In his fantasy, he is the owner of a castle. When he hears of Black Knights approaching, he sets out with his friends, Leegola and Frydo. Discovering the Die of Power, he sets off to Greyfarn, where they learn of the story behind the Die. Titanius is slightly against the quest, but decides to tag along. On several occasions, he refers to going back, such as when they have just passed through the Cave of Hopelessness.

On the other side, the Fellowship decides to seek Wipe Castle for help. Unfortunately, the king is a loon, and the entire royal army is gone. As Momon's forces arrive, they have a large, unwinnable battle at hand. But as things seems darkest, Leegola and her centaur army saves Wipe Castle. Knowing of Frydo's quest, the Fellowship decides to go help him. However, they are too late and Momon wins the battle, causing them to return to their world.

I'm...so...GREAT!!
Into the Wild Green Yonder
Bender takes a trip to Mars Vegas with the rest of the crew. There, he falls in love with Fanny, a burlesque dancer, who is the Don Bot's wife. He enters the Universal Poker Championship Tournament for her and wins against Fry with five kings.

After returning to Earth, Bender feels upset that the Feministas are committing more felonies than him. He gets hired by Zapp Brannigan to help him capture the Feministas. By getting Bender to wire tap Fry's "cellphone-telephone" Zapp finds out where the Feministas are hiding and chases them aboard the Nimbus, along with Bender and Kif. After an exciting space chase, Bender captures the Feministas and goes against them in court. They are found guilty and sent to Maxi-Padlock Prison.

Bender then breaks into the women's prison and helps the Feministas escape, because by doing so, he would have committed way more felonies than the women. He bends a brick wall and calls Farnsworth, who pilots the Planet Express Ship down to rescue them from the prison's forces. They crash a demolition ceremony, and in the end, Bender is sent through a wormhole with the rest of the Planet Express Crew.
Character description
update

Composition
Bender routinely claims to be made of thirty to forty percent of various metals, typically following his claims up by knocking on his own chassis. Unfortunately, his credibility on this matter is thrown into question by the fact that they add up to well over one hundred percent. Bender has alternately claimed to be:

*40% Zinc (1ACV13)
*40% Titanium (2ACV03)
*30% Iron, presumably mixed with osmium as stated in A Pharaoh to Remember (3ACV22)
*40% Dolemite (4ACV07)
*An unknown quantity of osmium (3ACV17)
*40% Lead (Futurama (video game))
*40% Luck/horseshoes (ItWGY)
*40% Chromium (6ACV03)
Total: 230% - 270% or greater. The number is dependent on whether or not one counts the "40% Horseshoes" claim, as the supposed horseshoes could have been made of one of the other metals (Titanium, Iron, or Lead) meaning that one could have been a restatement rather than a new figure. Regardless, the number is far above 100%. This error can be explained as due to Bender's being bad with math, making it plausible that he has given the wrong percentages (3ACV09).

Additionally, he has a 0.04% nickel impurity, which doesn't increase total percentage, but slightly decreases the percentages of everything else. This is apparently not a standard impurity, and is cited as making him unique.

There's also a mention that robots are made from recycled beer cans (and beer cans are made from recycled robots), so depending on the year 3000 composition of beer cans, he may have a certain percentage of aluminum in his alloy.

As a side note, "Dolemite" is also the name of a movie from 1974. The main character, Dolemite, is a pimp who leads an army of Kung Fu hookers. IMDB - Dolemite Bender has been been a pimp many times throughout the series.

Family
*Professor Farnsworth, creator of the sports utility robot on which Bender and all/most other modern robots are based.
*Flexo, another Bending unit of the same model.
*Mom, owner of Mom's Friendly Robot Co.
*His mother, a robotic arm who sends him Xmas cards.
*His father, who was killed by a giant can opener (2ACV01).
*Uncle Vladimir, who lived in Thermostadt, capital of the Robo-Hungarian Empire, and died at the ripe old age of 211.
*Tandy, Uncle Vladimir's son and hence Bender's cousin.
*Screwy Aunt Rita, who is a screw. (Note that Bender stated that he had an Aunt Rita during Leela's coma fantasy in the episode "The Sting", so this may not be true.)
*Albert, Bethany, Sally, Nina & 8 other orphans, briefly adopted from the Cookieville Minimum-Security Orphanarium
*Three penguin "children" (3ACV05)
*Junior, a child born to The Crushinator (US#009)
*Bender's First Born Son, Bender exchanges him for an Army of the Damned.
*Bender's grandmother, who is a bulldozer.
*Buster, Bender's identical cousin.
*Commodore LXIV, or Commodore 64. A painting of this robot is hanging in Uncle Vladimir's dining hall and can be assumed to be one of Bender's ancestors.
* Pet guinea pig

Age
Bender was originally constructed in 2998, making him 1-2 years old when Fry met him in 2999. The events in "Roswell that Ends Well" make his head 1055 years older than the rest of his body. The incident in "Teenage Mutant Leela's Hurdles" does largely not count as an ageing or the opposite, and fans largely regard his age to remain intact. In Bender's Big Score, Bender travels back in time several times, though the amount of times is unknown, the amount of Benders that appear at the end, may suggest at least a couple of thousand times. Given how many of these travels seems to be between 1000 to 5000 years in the past (from about 3007), an educated guess would make him at least a million years old, but probably more. An alternative theory could suggest when the time duplicates explode at the end of the first film, Bender is the same age he was at the end of the original run plus 995 years, as the Bender that went back 995 years in time to kill Fry is presumed to be the orginal and therefore wouldn't expire like the rest of them.

In the comic, "Rust in Peace", it is revealed that Bender, due to too much time travelling, must be inserted into a renewed unit. Farnsworth determines his age to be 27 203 before moving him to his new body. But 27 203 seems a lot less than what would be a quick educated guess. 27 203 would require Bender to have gone at least about a thousand years back each time and only gone 27 times, or instead gone more years back and done fewer than 27 times. But regardless of the ordeal, the amount of Benders appearing at the end of Bender's Big Score seems to contradict this fact. The event in the comic is thus not necessarily considered canon.

Durability
Bender frequently displays incredible durability, to the point that he appears to be indestructible. He has been completely flattened, hit point-blank with a shotgun, had several chips removed from his severed head, then had his head buried for over a thousand years, been launched out of a torpedo tube, withstood atmospheric reentry, submerged himself in lava, and been burned to nothing but his eyes and mouth after converting his body entirely into wood
(though this was a dream). In "Rebirth", after having been nearly eaten by a cyclophage and have a doomsday device explode inside him,he remarks "What does it take to kill me?!".
Trivia
*He has been charged for pimping.
*Bender's apartment number is 00100100. This is a binary representation of the ASCII character '$' or 36 in decimal.
*Bender's serial number is 2716057. This can be expressed as the sum of 2 cubes. Specifically, 9523 + (-951)3
*Additionally, he seems to be the 1729th unit produced by his "mommy".
*The word "bender" can refer to a drinking spree, hinting at Bender's heavy alcohol use.
*Bender is powered by a 6502 Microprocessor.
*Bender dies at the end of both of his what-if scenarios in each Anthology of Interest and both have one of the characters saying "Goodnight, sweet prince"(Fry in the first and Farnsworth in the second) to Bender when he dies.
*His self-destruct code is 1A2B3.
*Bender cannot have magnets attached to his head, or it will "screw up his inhibition unit", thus causing him to sing crazy variations of folk songs.
*Apparently stole the Prime Minister of Norway's arm.
*His birthstone is Robobium
*Is able to simultaneously reattach each of his severed arms with the other.
*He cannot get up when he is knocked on his back. At least not until he learns how to from the majestic turtle.
*His vanity plate reads “1 DVS BSTD” (one devious bastard).
*He said the last full sentence in all 4 films - "Well, we're boned" (Benders Big Score), "I love you, meatbags!" (The Beast with a Billion Backs), "Whip harder, Professor!" (Benders Game), "Into the breach, meatbags. Or not, whatever." (Into the Wild Green Yonder)
*Bender's waste management facilities may convert material he consumes into bricks.

Voice
Of all the voices on the show, Bender's voice was the most difficult to cast. This is because none of the creators and crew were sure what a robot should sound like yet. So they had every voice actor who auditioned also audition for the role of Bender. Even David X. Cohen was suggested for the role.

John DiMaggio originally auditioned with Bender's voice for Professor Farnsworth. Among the bases for the voice were the character of Taggart from Blazing Saddles and DiMaggio's original character "Charlie the Sausage Lover". In the audio commentary of Spanish Fry, David X. Cohen joked about it also being "90 parts John DiMaggio."

Catchphrases
Bender's basic catchphrase is "Bite my shiny metal ass".

Variations on this include the following:
*Bite my red-hot glowing ass! (1ACV12)
*Lick my frozen metal ass! (2ACV04)
*Bite my colossal metal ass! (2ACV16)
*The modern world can bite my splintery wooden ass! (4ACV14)
*Bite my glorious golden ass! (4ACV15)
*Bite my shiny metal face!! (Bender's Game)
*Bite my shiny metal hat. (Said by Fry, Into the Wild Green Yonder)

Other common catchphrases are:
*"Me, Bender": whenever he says "me", he usually follows it with "Bender", thus producing the sentence "me, Bender." Thus making this the most said character name on the show.
*"Well, we're boned.", said in situations where he, or a group of people including him, are in a large amount of trouble.
*"I'm back, baby!" whenever he makes an intriguing appearance on the scene; Bender had also said the phrase "We're back, baby!" on numerous occasions, particularly in reference to the series' revival. At one point, Bender just said, "Yeah, we're back." while filing his "nails" after escaping the wormhole.
*"Neat!", when Bender is taking a picture with his purple camera.
*"Cheese it!" whenever he encourages other characters to run away from trouble. This is used less commonly.
*"Fun on the bun!", another less common catchphrase that is used whenever Bender describes amusement.
*"He's pending for a bending.", a phrase used as a warning very few times throughout the show.
*"Bender is great!", like "Me, Bender", he usually likes to say this to emphasize his enormous ego.

Bender also has a tendency to call humans "meatbag" when he is displeased or annoyed with them. Additionally, Bender regularly says "Kill all humans", although, in Leela's dream he claims to whisper "except one", referring to Fry, every time too.

As stated in "War Is the H-Word", the top ten words that Bender uses more than any others is as follows:

Chump

Chumpette

Yours

Up

Pimpmobile

Bite

My

Shiny

Daffodil

Ass

It is by no means impossible that the second word in the list is not "metal" considering all the variations of his catchphrase. In reference to his use of the word "daffodil", he said the sentence "Hot-diggidy-daffodil" in this episode and again in The Beast with a Billion Backs. "Chumpette" is only uttered once though. "Pimpmobile" was also spoken by Bender in the game. However, in all likelihood, Bender's real most spoken words would most likely be along the lines of any other speaker of the English language: the, and, I, a, so; etc.

Assets and Titles
Bender has, over the years gained many assets and ranks in various organizations and a large amount of wealth. Some of these include:

*Served as Prime Minister of Trisol under the brief rule of Fry the Solid (possibly terminated when the old emperor came back into power)
*A castle, inherited from his uncle
*Leader of the League of Robots
*Commander of the Army of the Damned
*Iron Cook, on the television show of the same name (Zinc Saucier)
*The Dirty Double Cross, Earth's highest honor in swindling
*Calculon's official stalker (possibly fired when he maimed Calculon during a duel)
*Spy for the DOOP
*An enormous amount of wealth from various crimes
*Pharaoh of Osiris 4
*Prime Minister of Norway, due to him having the real Prime Minister of Norway's hand AND career chip

"In-A-Gadda-Da-Leela" is the ninetieth episode of Futurama, the second of the sixth production season and the seventh broadcast season. It aired on 24 June 2010 on Comedy Central. It guest stars Chris Elliott as the V-GINY censor ship. When a 'Death sphere' is threatening to destroy Earth, Nixon calls for Professor Farnsworth for a plan. The Professor has devised an undetectable ship which Turanga Leela and Zapp Brannigan must use to get into the 'death sphere' and destroy it. But not all goes according to plan.

The Story
Act I
After Zapp Brannigan dreams about "The Transcredible Exploits of Zapp Brannigan", he is called to the Secret White House, where President Richard Nixon has bad news. A death sphere have been seen destroying planets in nearby systems, and they now know it is headed for Earth. But when Zapp Brannigan is too cowardly to devise a plan, Nixon decides to try and ask a man he once deemed crazy, Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth. The Professor, acting on the fact that every death sphere has a small weakness, has devised a plan involving a Tiny One-Man Stealth Fighter.

After some deciding about who should go, they decide to send Turanga Leela and Zapp Brannigan together. They lift off at Cape Knievel. However, a side effect of its perfect cloak, means that only the ship itself is hidden, not its inhabitants, whom just appear to be floating. They make it near the death sphere, where it appears to have written V-GINY across it and lots of surveillance on its surface.

Meanwhile, back on Earth, the Professor is trying to figure out what the V-GINY is. But as it does not exist in any known catalogue, he assumes his thinking in his Chamber of Understanding.

Turanga Leela and Zapp Brannigan make it inside the sphere, which seems to be censoring television broadcasts by spitting a black spit on them. Inside, Leela and Brannigan are spotted, and they flee, but as they make a narrow escape out of the hatch, they lose control of the ship.

Act II
Leela and Brannigan awake in a jungle, where Leela is pinned underneath a tree. However, Brannigan is unable to lift it, so she is forced to sit still. Leela complains about her spacesuit being too hot, and Brannigan suggests taking them off, Leela complies and put on leaves to hide their 'naughty bits'. Leela, however, notices a strange act in Brannigan's behaviour, where he is far more considerate and tries to help her out while pinned. Brannigan goes out for food.

Back at Earth, Fry is beginning to wonder about why Leela isn't back yet, much to the annoyance of Bender, who feels he is being a third wheel. And while the crew discuss how best to make use of their time as the death sphere approaches, Farnsworth announces he has identified the death sphere to be a collision of two satellites; USAF Flying Destiny and FCC V-Chip. Farnsworth has further discovered that the ship is just acting in its programming, and thus destroying indecent planets, like Planet XXX, Poopiter and That world that can't be mentioned in polite company. Farnsworth's plan is to convince the people of Earth to be less indecent, so that the censor ship may reconsider destroying it.

Meanwhile, Brannigan returns with nuts and fruit berries for Leela. He explains that there are no intelligent life to be found on the planet as well as the ship being destroyed following the crash. After discussing the planet they have landed on, Brannigan notices how it is sort of like the Garden of Eden. A talking snake appears to explain how their situation is just like Adam and Eve, but Brannigan throws it off as just being delirious from dehydration.

In New New York, Farnsworth's plan goes under way to convince people to be more decent, but it takes the form of a 'the world is end' protest, which is easily dismissed as crazy. They see Sal attempting to pay five dollars for a night with Petunia, who announces she could go for just three dollars, much to Sal's disgust, and thus goes into the Pubic Library (and not public library as Fry thought).

The talking snake continues to convince Leela, she should do it with Zapp. Meanwhile, Zapp fetches the telescope so they could view whether Earth was still whole. On Lo'ihi Island in the Pacific Ocean on Earth, the Planet Express crew makes one desperate attempt to convince the censor ship of there being some decency left on Earth. However, during their purity chant, Bender cannot keep it in his pants and starts doing it with the satellite dish.

And as such, Leela observes V-GINY destroying the Earth. Leela becomes convinced that perhaps she should attempt to do it with Zapp to recreate the human race. As they discuss their plan for their new humanity, an apple falls onto Leela's head, whom begin seductively suggesting a kiss to Zapp.

Act III
Leela begins to notice that the nut berries Zapp brought her earlier was quite too salty for nut berries, and the apple is really helping, as the salt made her quite delirious. In fact, they were exactly as salty as Fry's trail mix. She then discovers that the nuts and berries were actually the trail mix Fry gave her before the trip and Zapp confesses. Zapp begins to discuss how the entire scenario with them on the planet was entirely of his making to get in Leela's pants with avoiding mentioning of finding the ship, water and other provisions.

Even the tree upon her is of Zapp's making and the ship is still operational. But Leela remembers seeing Earth being destroyed, however, as they are talking, Fry arrives on the scene. Leela wonders how he ended up on this planet as well, to which Zapp confesses the Earth blowing up was simply a visualisation created by the ship's holographic targeting projector. Zapp explains his motives was simply to get Leela to make out with him, which she can easily believe, and thus beats him up.

And just as they reunite with the crew, the V-GINY arrives. The V-GINY explains that the Earth may yet be redeemed if Zapp and Leela make love like Adam and Eve. Leela decides to comply as it is to save Earth, while Zapp has become nervous by doing it. The crew is horrified by the act and Fry demands the V-GINY to censor it, which ironically decides to label it as 'approved for all audiences' and then leaves Earth.
A storyboard released from act 12 of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Leela" previews a scene possibly entitled "Undressing". Leela is lying on the floor with her legs trapped under a log, saying her suit is making her sweat. Zapp suggests to strip them off and the scene ends with Leela stripping her suit off. This is the same scene shown in the second promotional picture for the episode, in which Leela and Zapp have already stripped their suits off.
Reception
"In-A-Gadda-Da-Leela" aired 24 June, 2010 10:30pm EST on Comedy Central, preceded by "Rebirth" as a lead-in to The Daily Show. The episode received 2.775 million viewers according to Nielsen Ratings, 0.2 million less than "Rebirth". It received 1.8/3 of households and 1.5/5 of adults between 18 and 49.

It received mixed reviews, some people saying it was better that "Rebirth" due to it being a standalone episode, but most people saying was not as good. A great portion of the Futurama fans hated the ending, and many of them did not like that Fry and Leela's relationship was probably in a strange limbo once again. There have also been complaints about Leela's lack of devotion to Fry.

Due to its airing together with "Rebirth", "In-A-Gadda-Da-Leela" was immediately compared to that and many reviewers did not consider "In-A-Gadda-Da-Leela" as strong an episode as "Rebirth".
Trivia
*The opening sequence was abridged in this episode. Consequently, there is no opening cartoon.
*With this episode, David Herman was officially promoted to a series regular.
*The sound effect used for the stealth ship's cloaking is the transporter sound from Star Trek
*The picket signs that the Planet Express crew hold are as follows:
**Amy: "Shame on everything!"
**Zoidberg: "Sin no more!"
**Hermes: "Judgement Day is at hand!"
**Bender: "Bender is great!"
**Fry: "The end is nigh!"
**Farnsworth: "Repent!"
*The title of the episode is based on the song In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (song), which translates to "In the Garden of Eden."
*Hermes is shown to listen to his IPod, but it can be an eyePod which can be a product sell by the Mom Store as shown in the next episode

Allusions
*The episode's title is a spoof of the song In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (song), which was apparently first called In the Garden of Eden.
*Leela and Zapp's infiltration of the sphere includes many references to Star Wars, including Leela mentioning the Force and a voice very reminiscent of Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan Kenobi.
*Zapp once again mention his "captain's log", a reference to Star Trek.
*Hermes tried to find references to the V-Giny ship in the Janeway's Guide, a reference to the captain of Star Trek: Voyager and Jane's Information Group.
*The index search for V-Giny against silhouettes is similar to the method of identifying the Cygnus in The Black Hole.
*The V-Giny ship is similar in both name and origin (i.e., from an old 20th century Earth vessel) to V'Ger from Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
*In yet another reference to Star Trek, the plot point of two probes colliding and merging in both form and programming is taken from the Star Trek The Original Series episode The Changeling (Star Trek: The Original Series).
*Nixon's head says, "Sock it to me!" This is a reference to his appearance on Laugh-In.
*Zapp makes a reference to CSI: Miami.
*The V-Chip censored such programs as The Simpsons and Assarama, very obvious inappropriate versions of both of Matt Groening's shows.
General Colin Pac-Man is a Pac-Man character created by the What-If Machine. In the scenario created by Fry asking what if life were more like a video game, the residents of the planet "Nintendu 64" invade Earth, and the General asks Fry how to defeat them because he is expert in video games. They and the Planet Express crew travelled across a "Pac-Man-like maze" following the General. During the battle, the Lrrr's ship shoots him, and he died disappearing by folding over like in the Pac-Man games. Then his wife came and cried.

Trivia
*He is named after both Pac-Man and General Colin Powell
*He and his wife made sounds ("waka-waka-waka") like in the video game while eating white balls in the maze.
Helmut Spargle was once a famous TV chef and host of Down-Home Country Cooking With Helmut Spargle. After the extreme soda company that sponsored his show replaced him with his former student Elzar, he wound up at Bumbase Alpha baking pies out of shoes for hobos. He began teaching Bender to cook in order to seek revenge against Elzar, but when Spargle ate Bender's food, his stomach exploded he passed out and was left in a ditch by Bender.

Due to his presence in Into the Wild Green Yonder, it is plausible that someone rescued him from the ditch that Bender left him in.
Trivia
*Helmut's appearance seems to be based off Hans Moleman's from The Simpsons.
*Helmut's character, training and death are a parody of Yoda from Star Wars.
Mothers Day is celebrated by robots on Earth to honor their creator Mom. Presents and cash are given similair to Mother's Day in the 20th century. Robots love the day so much that even Bender is willing to buy presents instead of stealing them. However Mom secretly recycles the presents (by crushing them into powder and she sold them as a hocus-pocus cure for cancer) and takes the cash. It is also the day Professor Farnsworth left Mom for the first time so she hates Mother's Day despite acting like she loves it.

For the 3001 Mother's Day, Mom programed her robots to revolt and make her the Supreme Overlord of Earth.
Flexo is a Bending Unit and identical to Bender in every possible respect, except that he has a stylish metal goatee attached. He was built by the same arm as Bender and other bending units. The two of them crossed paths when Fry demonstrated an ancient car to his friends and ran Flexo over, he had to be restored by the Professor and Amy in a lengthy operation. Flexo proved to be instrumental in safely delivering the crown of Miss Universe to its destination, but was arrested afterwards because of his similarity with Bender, the real culprit. Flexo later stumbled across Bender's path again when he tried to seduce Angleyne. He is later seen in "Attack of the Killer App" during the Annual e-Waste Recycling Festival in a hazardous waste bin, arguing that bending units are dangerously outdated. Whether he was actually destroyed or not is yet to be known.

Character Description
Appearance
Flexo, a Bending Unit, is identical to Bender in appearance, as well as most mannerisms. Like Bender, his finish is "Foghat Grey" (as opposed to gold, as explained in "The Farnsworth Parabox"). Even his voice is identical to Bender's, and when the two are forced to fight, the fight is perfectly symmetrical. The sole exception to their identical appearance is the fact that Flexo has a black metal goatee affixed to the base of his head.

Personality
Flexo is similar to Bender in that he often interjects conversations with cruel and cutting remarks, however he is unlike Bender in that he universally follows them up with a hearty laugh, and a compliment to the person at whom the "insult" was directed. For instance, in "The Lesser of Two Evils", he remarks to Fry that sharing the watch for the Jumbonium atom was him "8 hours of solid boredom" only to follow with a laugh and "nah I'm kiddin', you're a wonderful man!" While initially it is assumed by Fry, that this is a deceptive personality trait; it later becomes apparent that he is, in fact, genuinely kind.

Family
*Bender, identical model
*Angleyne, ex-wife and lover as of "Bendless Love".

Additional Info
Trivia
*Flexo's Serial Number is 3370318, a number expressible as the sum of two cubes (1193 + 1193)
*Flexo was going to appear on "Crimes of the Hot" but was taken out to avoid confusion with the fans who haven't seen him before

The Story
Act I
At the New New York annual e-Waste event, Mayor Poopenmeyer announces the importance of throwing out dated e-waste. Even the Planet Express crew is there to throw out old electronics, such as doomsday devices, Japanese toilets and evidence. When prompted about where all the waste goes, Poopenmeyer tells them that they get some idiots to fly it off to the third world. This cues Farnsworth to announce to his crew that they are the idiots to fly it off. The third world turns out to be the Third World of the Antares system, where all the e-waste are dumped on the ground and burnt, turning it into useless material and releasing the toxin into the air, as well as the inhabitants dismantling the ship and Bender. As Leela discovers the horrors that their e-waste is leaving other planets in, she decides that the crew should avoid throwing out electronics, just because it is dated, and decides to take her old phone back.

However, her noble actions are short lived as an ad for the new eyePhone appears on the television, and the crew immediately throws out their current phones and heads for the queue. The queue, however, is so long, it is all the way through town. After a day of tireless walking, the crew begins to suspect that they are nothing but consumer zombies. Luckily, Dr. Ben Beeler is there to relieve them of their worries, as the eyePhone have all the apps you need. Soon, they arrive at the Mom Store, where a giant screen with Mom announces that the eyePhones are in short supply, which soon spreads panic among the shoppers. However, as the viewers soon learn, the short supply line is purely a method of increasing demand. While being told that with the eyePhone, he has no choice of carrier, can't change the battery and more, Fry becomes impatient and demands the man at the counter to take his money. Though, on the question of why its name is an 'eyePhone', Fry soon learns, it is because it is installed into their eyes.

Act II
Soon, all the crew members are addicts to their eyePhones and especially the extra service, Twitcher, where they can sent small view messages to everyone who wishes to see it. Bender soon becomes addicted to the popularity he can easily gain from sending out videos and increasing his amount of followers. Fry, on the other hand, is not doing so well in numbers of followers, but decides to take a challenge with Bender about who can first reach one million followers. To make the bet interesting, however, the loser is to bath in a pool filled with puke and diarrhea from a two-headed goat.

Meanwhile, Mom is very pleased with the sale of her eyePhones, because they are a much more efficient way of sucking out information of people, instead of doing it the old fashion way. With Twitcher, people are apparently willing to post everything they do, which all eyePhones record and Mom can see all this information. In addition, she is pleased to learn that Bender and Fry are throwing their million follower-Twitcher challenge, because when one person reaches one million followers, she can initiate her Twitt-worm, what she calls the true killer app of the eyePhone, but never fully explains what it does.

Back at Planet Express, Bender's follower numbers are raising fast, while Fry is still in the two digits. However, Fry learns about Leela's horrible secret, that she has a singing boil on her right butt cheek, that she calls Susan Boil. However, in discovering it, his eyePhone also filmed it. When Leela discovers that he has it on video, she asks him not to upload it, even though Fry can see a decent potential for his upload, and it could make him win the bet. In a desperation of not wanting to swim in puke and diarrhea, he uploads it.

Act III
The video is a huge success, but Leela is devastated when she discovers that Fry lied to her. Walking through the streets of New New York, Leela feels she have become a freak show and desperately wants to hide her shame.

However, the video results in Fry and Bender reaching a tie with both one million followers, and no one has to swim in the pool. Mom is even more pleased with the results, as she now has one to two million people she can infect with the Twit-worm. In front of the Planet Express headquarters, Leela finds Fry, who wants to apologize for uploading the video and explains he actually took a swim in the pool for her sake. But Leela has discovered that her boil is already yesterday's news, and nobody cares about it any more.

Meanwhile, around them, hundreds of people walking in a zombie like fashion begins emerging. All heading towards the Mom Store, where they are going to be the first to purchase the new eyePhone 2.0.
Doomsday devices are devices designed to destroy as much possible. Several of them are created by Professor Farnsworth who is always looking for opportunities to use them. He used one which imploded creating a black hole which sucked in the chronitons. The Planet Express building has at least two storage areas for these devices. Farnsworth's favourite was the Spheroboom, until it was used and therefore destroyed.

A doomsday device powered Bender when he was dying after getting out of the birthing machine. However, he had to keep partying, otherwise the energy of the device would accumulate and he would explode. During the Annual e-Waste Recycling Festival the Professor threw some old devices beacause they are dangerous.

The Story
Act I
At the New New York annual e-Waste event, Mayor Poopenmeyer announces the importance of throwing out dated e-waste.

There is some kind of contest, in which Mom controls Twitter and Bender hacks Facebook to control it. Fry and Leela take votes from citizens, asking who they think will win. Also, the crew goes to a planet that is a waste dump to eliminate e-waste. The children of the planet strip the ship and Bender for waste. Soon the crew discover that children do all of the work on the planet, except for whipping the children.
