Pocket Pal is the name of a miniature robot, made just big enough to use a AA battery. It was originally supposed to be a tool for the audience to understand the future setting better, it would tell Fry about certain aspects of the future. This was abandoned early on and the character forgotten about. In The Beast with a Billion Backs, it was used by Dr. Ogden Wernstrom to demonstrate that robots can not go through the anamoly. Farnsworth and Wernstrom then just decided to kill a bunch of other pocket pals just for the fun of it.
