The barking snakes are snakes capable of barking like dogs, and, according to Professor Farnsworth, are known to turn up in a salad at Olive Garden. They were extinct at one point, but were later brought back to life, as pointed out by Turanga Leela. Since then, the barking snakes have been widely bred, being seen in such places as the USA and Norway (6ACV13). The Norwegian seed guard used them as guard dogs during Xmas 3010 as he welcomed the Planet Express crew to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault.

Quotes

Turanga Leela: Professor, maybe there's some way to bring the pine trees back to life. Like we did with the barking snakes. [A snake barks.]
Professor Farnsworth: Pine trees aren't barking snakes. They won't just turn up in a salad at Olive Garden. But there is one hope, and as usual, it's Norwegian!
