History
History
In the year 3000, the name of the city of New York City has been changed to New New York, presumably when it was rebuilt after one of Earth's periods of alien invasion. The city of New New York is built upon the ruins of Old New York. The city has seen some changes: the subways have been replaced with a tube transport network, and ethnic neighborhoods like China Town and Little Italy have been joined by Little Neptune. But in many ways it has not changed much in 1000 years: locals are still rude, public transportation is over-crowded, and it is a place where many cultures mingle.

New New York is located in the Northeastern United States on Earth, approximately halfway between Washington D.C. and Boston. The location at the Hudson River delta, which feeds into a naturally sheltered harbor and then into the Atlantic Ocean, has helped the city grow in significance as a trading city. Much of the city is built on the three islands of Manhattan, Staten Island, and Long Island, which are built above the Old New York, making land scarce and encouraging a high population density.

The city's land has been changed considerably by human intervention, with substantial land reclamation along the waterfronts.

New New York is still one of the most diverse cities on earth. Throughout its history, the city has been a major point of entry for human immigrants; the term melting pot was first coined to describe densely populated immigrant neighborhoods.

Since the 21st century, New New York's climate has not significantly changed. In the 31st century, most greenhouse gases are caused by robots, but the human population has found ways to deal with global warming. The city still has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are typically hot and humid and winters are cold, featuring prevailing wind patterns that blow offshore and somewhat minimize the influence of the Atlantic Ocean.

Summers are typically hot and humid and winters are cold, featuring prevailing wind patterns that blow offshore and somewhat minimize the influence of the Atlantic Ocean.

First appearance"Space Pilot 3000" (1ACV01)
Episode

New New York is a major city in the United States and the primary setting of Futurama. New New York is the reincarnation of the former New York City, remnants of which can still be found underground.

Geography

New New York is located in the Northeastern United States on Earth, approximately halfway between Washington D.C. and Boston. The location at the Hudson River delta, which feeds into a naturally sheltered harbor and then into the Atlantic Ocean, has helped the city grow in significance as a trading city. Much of the city is built on the three islands of Manhattan, Staten Island, and Long Island, which are built above the Old New York, making land scarce and encouraging a high population density. The city's land has been changed considerably by human intervention, with substantial land reclamation along the waterfronts.

Screenie

First Appearance: "Bender Gets Made"
Name Reference: Refers to Little Italy, a neighborhood in New York. As well as bits, a unit of memory in computer, and thereby robotic, systems.
Description: A robot neighborhood in NNY, also the home of the Robot Mafia.

Little Neptune

Little Neptune.jpg

First Appearance: "My Three Suns"
Name Reference: An immigrant neighborhood, like Little Italy or Chinatown
Description: A seedy neighborhood inhabited largely by Neptunian immigrants. It seems to be a somewhat vague reference to Chalmun's Cantina scene in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Both seem seedy, have a menagerie of robot and alien denizens, and both feature the main characters going into a place that sell food. Also, the scene where Fry is saved by Leela from the Organ Dealer and his accomplice is similar to when Obi-Wan Kenobi saves Luke Skywalker from Cornelius Evazan and Ponda Baba.

Demographics

Neptunians are among the most notable Alien immigrants.
Robots are among the poorest in society.

New New York is still one of the most diverse cities on earth. Throughout its history, the city has been a major point of entry for human immigrants; the term melting pot was first coined to describe densely populated immigrant neighborhoods. During the last 1000 years, robots (among them Bending Units), aliens (among them Neptunians and Decapodians), and mutants also began to settle down in New New York and live in peaceful coexistence with each other. Sewer mutants are an exception: They have to live segregated from the rest of society in New New York Sewers.

Most of the population of New New York lives in apartments. Only a few can afford real estates. The city's population still has a large income disparity that applies to human beings as well as aliens and robots. However, it can be observed that aliens are among the wealthiest citizens while robots are among the poorest and most criminal citizens of the society (see Robot Mafia) despite, or probably because of, their increased intelligence. Although almost all sewer mutants, except Leela, live segregated from the rest of the world, and appear dirty, poor, and unhealthy to beings living above New New York Sewers, this sub-society consist of a wide range of white collar (doctors, teachers, etc.) and blue collar workers.

Leela's apartment building

Screenie

First Appearance: "Parasites Lost" (although there is a possibility that the bed in which Leela and Fry had sex "Anthology of Interest I" is here).
Description: A fairly regular apartment building containing the sparse apartment in which Leela used to live until it was destroyed by the nudist alien scammers.

Robot Arms Apartments

See Robot Arms Apartments.
Screenie

First Appearance: "I, Roommate"
Name Reference: Variant of a classic name formula, such as "King's Arms Inn" or "Garfield Arms Apartments."
Description: A high-rise apartment community that caters to Robot residents. Home to Bender and Fry. Most rooms are little more than 2 cubic meter storage units, as robots require little more than a place to recharge. Bender seems to have lucked into (or pays extra for) a room with a massive closet, which itself has multiple rooms and a large window.

Economy

New New York is a global hub of international and interstellar business and commerce. The city has always attracted many big and small businesses. Many major companies are headquartered in New New York.

Malfunctioning Eddie's Rocket Car Emporium

Screenie

First Appearance: "Put Your Head on My Shoulder"
Name Reference: The name refers to Crazy Eddie, a consumer electronics chain founded in Brooklyn, New York. Unlike his human predecessor, Eddie is merely a malfunctioning robot and not a felon convicted for fraud.
Description: The most high-end place in NNY to buy luxury hover cars, including the Thundercougerfalconbird. They claim their prices are low because of Eddie's malfunctions, but this claim is not supported by the hard-sell tactics of their sales staff, particularly Victor.

Other smaller businesses in New New York City.

Government and Public Services

Citihall: The seat of New New York's government.

The government of New New York is very centralized. It is responsible for public education, correctional institutions, libraries, public safety, recreational facilities, sanitation, water supply and welfare services. Mayor C. Randall Poopenmeyer is the elected mayor of New New York and has filled this function for at least the past eight years.

Central Bureaucracy

See Central Bureaucracy.
Screenie

First Appearance: "How Hermes Requisitioned His Groove Back"
Description: Central Bureaucracy regulates and controls all bureaucratic activities within New New York Notes: A bureaucrat beholder (A creature from Dungeons and Dragons which is pretty much a giant, floating cyclopean head with a large amount of eye-stalks sticking out of its head) guards at least one corridor; it was found sleeping on the job and begged the Planet Express crew not to tell his superiors.

Education

Academy of Inventors Headquarters

Academy of Inventors.jpg

First Appearance: "A Big Piece of Garbage"
Description: The headquarters for the Academy of Inventors. They have annual meetings, during which their members show off their latest inventions.

Public Library

Screenie

First Appearance: "The Day the Earth Stood Stupid"
Description: The place from where the Big Brain was leading the Brain Spawns invasion of Earth. Contains, among others, the Ancient Literature room which houses many classical works of literature.

Transportation

Tube Transportation and hovercars.

Subways, buses, and other forms of public transportation have been replaced by the Tube Transport System. Flying cars or Hovercars replaced wheeled automobiles as they are faster and are not stuck in traffic congestion on the ground, although most of them seem to follow designated airways.

Tube Transport System

See Tube Transport System.
Screenie

First Appearance: "Space Pilot 3000"
Name Reference: It is based on pneumatic tubes, originally used to transport documents throughout offices (and still in use within the Central Bureaucracy).
Description: A user announces where he or she wishes to go, and the tube will activate and route them to their desired destination. It is unknown whether they use pneumatic pressure (as the original tubes did) or something else. Given that a humanoid shape doesn't fill the tube, pneumatic pressure seems unlikely.

South Street Spaceport

See South Street Spaceport.
Screenie

First Appearance: "A Flight to Remember"
Name Reference: South Street Seaport is a locale in contemporary New York.
Description: A hub for incoming and outgoing spacecraft. Seems to serve both military and civilian craft.

Climate

Since the 21st century, New New York's climate has not significantly changed. In the 31st century, most greenhouse gases are caused by robots, but the human population has found ways to deal with global warming. The city still has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are typically hot and humid and winters are cold, featuring prevailing wind patterns that blow offshore and somewhat minimize the influence of the Atlantic Ocean.

Environment

Owls at the Planet Express entrance.
See Pests.

Pests remain a problem in the future. In an effort to fight the rat and pigeon problem, owls were introduced. However, they soon filled the ecological niche becoming the most prevalent pest of New New York. Cockroaches have reached the size of human beings, rats—although greatly diminished in number—can be seen in the New York Sewers. Despite the introduction of the owl to New New York, pigeons are still present, albeit with a greatly diminished population.

Other species have arrived in New New York, among them golden marmosets who, like owls, have been introduced to fight pests, harmless land squids, toilet snails and wall gophers.

Architecture

The building form most closely associated with New New York City is the skyscraper, whose introduction and widespread adoption saw New York buildings shift from the low-scale European tradition of the 19th century to the vertical rise of business districts in the 20th century to the vertical rise of apartments in the 30th century.

The late 30th century faced a revival of the Populuxe or Googie style which shape the skyline of New New York in the 31st century. Various devices and architecture are similar to this form of architecture that originated in the mid-20th century. Upswept roofs, curvaceous, geometric shapes, steel and neon, and bold use of glass are some of the most notable characteristics of Populuxe architecture.

Other buildings are inspired by the Minimalist movement such as Central Bureaucracy. Objects are reduced to their necessary elements, in this case a cube. Madison Cube Garden is also minimalist while many other buildings are examples of Postmodern architecture which incorporates several styles of architecture.

Parks

The Jurassic Kiddie Park can be found in Central Park.

New New York offers several large recreational areas and attractions open to the public. Although Central Park is not directly shown in the episodes, the Jurassic Kiddie Park reveals that the Central park is still present in the 31st century. Jurassic Kiddie Park, which is aimed at children, offers rides on a living Tyrannosaurus Rex. People are also able to feed the carnivore with pigs for 5¢.

Monument Beach is a man-made beachside park in New New York that boasts a collection of many of the world's greatest monuments, stolen by an evil supervillain who was elected Governor of New New York. Some of the greatest monuments are the Sphinx, the White House (which was apparently rebuilt in Washington, D.C.), the leaning tower of Pisa, the Mo'ai statues, and a slightly altered Mount Rushmore.
