The Number 9 Man (or just Number 9 or simply Nine) was a cameo character appearing in the first and second production seasons of Futurama. He was used merely as an Easter Egg in crowd scenes. But much like the career chips and the professor's PJ-joke, he was slowly forgotten and did not appear in season 3 and 4.

However, he made a reappearance in Bender's Big Score and Into the Wild Green Yonder where his story was revealed.

The Legion of Mad Fellows

Further information: Legion of Mad Fellows

When Nine became grand curator is unknown, but the audio commentary of Into the Wild Green Yonder seems to hint that he was in the Legion prior to the year 3000.

As grand curator (which is essentially a knowledgeable leader) of the Legion, he becomes the story teller for Philip J. Fry's mission to possibly end the an epic long battle between two ancient races, as they by 3009 have noticed that the Chi have been re-emerging.

Original purpose

The reason for his number was to indicate a yet to be revealed society caste system, where lower numbers were basically slaves, and higher numbers were of kingly status but this was abandoned before the series went live. 9's were drones who walked around all depressed.

His actual story was changed by the writers when given a speaking role. The re-assigned purpose of the 9 on his shirt appears to be that it is his name.

Trivia

  • It is very interesting that he can read others' thoughts and keeps on a tinfoil hat to block them out, as well as the Dark Ones psychic attack. In season 1 & 2, as well as Bender's Big Score, he wasn't wearing it. This may have been to conceal his involvement with the Legion of Mad Fellows, but this would have required not thinking about the Dark Ones, or Legion of Mad Fellows, as well as dealing with the thoughts of others coming into his head.

Quotes

  • Number 9 Man: Aw, shoot! I got hot sauce on my Number 9 shirt!
