The Number 9 Man was a cameo character appearing in the first and second production seasons of Futurama. He was used merely as an Easter Egg in crowd scenes. But much like the career chips and the professor's PJ-joke, he was slowly forgotten and did not appear in season 3 and 4.

However, he made a reappearance in Bender's Big Score. And according to the commentary of Bender's Big Score his truth was be revealed in Into the Wild Green Yonder where he finally got a speaking role.

Significance and Background

The reason for his number was to indicate a yet to be revealed society caste system, where lower numbers were basically slaves, and higher numbers were of kingly status but this was abandoned before the series went live. 9's were drones who walked around all depressed.

His actual story was changed by the writers when given a speaking role. The re-assigned purpose of the 9 on his shirt appears to be that it is his name. He is the grand curator of the Legion of Mad Fellows. Which is essentially a knowledgeable leader.
