Smitty and URL (the latter pronounced "Earl") are Peace Officers for the NNYPD who work together to bring down crime. they always try to catch crooks and stop gangs like the Robot Mafia, and were successful in bringing down Bender when they thought that he was Robot Santa Claus.

• URL's character was made to sound like a 1970s soul brother.
• Smitty became a cop because his father owned a bar where people wouldn't pay him money.
• Smitty and URL seem to ride NNYC patrol car 718, which is an anagram for 187, the LA murder code.
• "URL" was one of the names originally considered for Bender.
• Both are armed with what is first perceived to be a lightsabre, but then seen to be a Lightsabre style, retractable night-stick/truncheon. As seen in the episode Space Pilot 3000
