Discussion

The administrator of WikiSimpsons have asked whether we should participate in an alliance of wikis regarding Animated Sitcoms. I personally have not yet have the time to consider this, so I am opening this for discussion. --Sviptalk 05:41, 23 May 2011 (CEST)

Hi all, it's Solar Dragon from Wikisimpsons. I have had this idea for a while now, I wanted to set up something like NIWA but for Animated Sitcoms. There are a lot we need to work out though.

  • Will it only be for independent wikis?
  • What will be the requirements for joining?
  • We also need a hub website. Will anyone be able to host this?

A similar discussion will be opened up on Wikisimpsons once we move to our new host. Until then, I will be happy to answer any questions here. 92.7.205.39 09:40, 23 May 2011 (CEST)

Speaking in the position as a user, not an administrator: As I understand the offer, nothing will change except that we will officially be a part of a larger group, and be linked to from this Animated Sitcoms website, but The Infosphere in itself will not have to change style, commercial attitude or anything like that?
I can say right now that I will not be able to take great part in this overall project, nor will I be able to start contributing to some other wiki (I focus on Wikipedia and the Infosphere atm), but if I understand the project properly, I don't mind it. Aki 12:51, 23 May 2011 (CEST)
Sounds to me as if no harm will come from this, unless the alliance goes rogue or something. I barely wiki things these days, so I'm unlikely to venture into the other wikis in the group. But so long as none of them are Futurama centric, I can see this being beneficial. - Quolnok 13:39, 23 May 2011 (CEST)
While I don't think it would harm us, it may draw in new users. I'm unsure about joining until we learn more about this alliance. Teyrn of Highever 13:47, 23 May 2011 (CEST)

To answer your questions, there will be no other Futurama wikis in the alliance. All other Futurama wikis that want to join will have to ask for a merger with you guys and from there, it'll be down to you guys. Part of this discussion is to find out more about what people want. It'll be set out something like NIWA, with representatives from each wiki being admins on the central forum we will have. Links to other wikis will be on the hub page, as well as on the member wikis, links to the other wikis on articles where needed. Basically, it will be becoming part of a larger (hopefully) group of wikis. The representatives of the wikis can decide on whether a new member should join or not etc. So far, there are only two wikis I have an eye on (Wikisimpsons and The Infosphere) so if any one knows of any other non-Wikia wikis that fit under the Animated Sitcom description, please list them here so I can pass this idea on to them. 92.24.142.236 23:15, 23 May 2011 (CEST)

Drawing in new users is a good thing. (Drawing in spammers is a completely different matter, however...)
Can't think of any, sorry.
Why should it only be for independent wikis? Sanfazer 00:46, 24 May 2011 (CEST)
That is how NIWA operates. I also would prefer no Wikia wikis, we can persuade them to move away instead. 92.29.186.76 07:27, 24 May 2011 (CEST)
I understand. But what if a wiki on ShoutWiki wants to join? Sanfazer 16:32, 24 May 2011 (CEST)
Well, I think that wikis on any wiki host other than Wikia (I just really hate Wikia) then they should join. If a ShoutWiki wiki wants to join then they'll be free to join (I am quite biased towards ShoutWiki though, even though Wikisimpsons is moving from ShoutWiki, I am an admin on the hub and a trusted member and the staff like me :P) and I am even working on a Bob's Burgers Wiki while another user of Wikisimpsons is working on an American Dad wiki. Just no Wikia I think. If any one else would like to have Wikia wikis, we'd need a vote. 92.7.182.244 17:00, 24 May 2011 (CEST)
So we're the UN. Sounds good to me. Sanfazer 17:30, 24 May 2011 (CEST)

I'm with pretty much everyone else. This sounds like a great idea. More traffic, cross-linking, and basically an exclusivity contract. And no Wikia! (because the word itself still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth after our early dealings with them (hint: stolen content!)) --Buddy 08:32, 28 May 2011 (CEST)

When I took over Futurama Wiki, I made a point not to steal content from here. However, I now 100% hate Wikia and I want to destroy them. If others also seem to dislike the idea of Wikia wikis joining, then no Wikia wikis will join.
If everyone seems to like the idea, we would need someone to host a hub site similar to NIWA. Alternatively, we could make a wiki hub and get editing limited to admins who would the the hub staff and a forum on it too (ShoutWiki has got a new WikiForum extension). This would be the alternative if no one can host and design a site. 92.20.137.92 20:49, 29 May 2011 (CEST)
