Discussion

The administrator of WikiSimpsons have asked whether we should participate in an alliance of wikis regarding Animated Sitcoms. I personally have not yet have the time to consider this, so I am opening this for discussion. --Sviptalk 05:41, 23 May 2011 (CEST)

Hi all, it's Solar Dragon from Wikisimpsons. I have had this idea for a while now, I wanted to set up something like NIWA but for Animated Sitcoms. There are a lot we need to work out though.

 • Will it only be for independent wikis?
 • What will be the requirements for joining?
 • We also need a hub website. Will anyone be able to host this?

A similar discussion will be opened up on Wikisimpsons once we move to our new host. Until then, I will be happy to answer any questions here. 92.7.205.39 09:40, 23 May 2011 (CEST)

Speaking in the position as a user, not an administrator: As I understand the offer, nothing will change except that we will officially be a part of a larger group, and be linked to from this Animated Sitcoms website, but The Infosphere in itself will not have to change style, commercial attitude or anything like that?
I can say right now that I will not be able to take great part in this overall project, nor will I be able to start contributing to some other wiki (I focus on Wikipedia and the Infosphere atm), but if I understand the project properly, I don't mind it. Aki 12:51, 23 May 2011 (CEST)
Sounds to me as if no harm will come from this, unless the alliance goes rogue or something. I barely wiki things these days, so I'm unlikely to venture into the other wikis in the group. But so long as none of them are Futurama centric, I can see this being beneficial. - Quolnok 13:39, 23 May 2011 (CEST)
While I don't think it would harm us, it may draw in new users. I'm unsure about joining until we learn more about this alliance. Teyrn of Highever 13:47, 23 May 2011 (CEST)

To answer your questions, there will be no other Futurama wikis in the alliance. All other Futurama wikis that want to join will have to ask for a merger with you guys and from there, it'll be down to you guys. Part of this discussion is to find out more about what people want. It'll be set out something like NIWA, with representatives from each wiki being admins on the central forum we will have. Links to other wikis will be on the hub page, as well as on the member wikis, links to the other wikis on articles where needed. Basically, it will be becoming part of a larger (hopefully) group of wikis. The representatives of the wikis can decide on whether a new member should join or not etc. So far, there are only two wikis I have an eye on (Wikisimpsons and The Infosphere) so if any one knows of any other non-Wikia wikis that fit under the Animated Sitcom description, please list them here so I can pass this idea on to them. 92.24.142.236 23:15, 23 May 2011 (CEST)

Drawing in new users is a good thing. (Drawing in spammers is a completely different matter, however...)
Can't think of any, sorry.
Why should it only be for independent wikis? Sanfazer 00:46, 24 May 2011 (CEST)
That is how NIWA operates. I also would prefer no Wikia wikis, we can persuade them to move away instead. 92.29.186.76 07:27, 24 May 2011 (CEST)
I understand. But what if a wiki on ShoutWiki wants to join? Sanfazer 16:32, 24 May 2011 (CEST)
Well, I think that wikis on any wiki host other than Wikia (I just really hate Wikia) then they should join. If a ShoutWiki wiki wants to join then they'll be free to join (I am quite biased towards ShoutWiki though, even though Wikisimpsons is moving from ShoutWiki, I am an admin on the hub and a trusted member and the staff like me :P) and I am even working on a Bob's Burgers Wiki while another user of Wikisimpsons is working on an American Dad wiki. Just no Wikia I think. If any one else would like to have Wikia wikis, we'd need a vote. 92.7.182.244 17:00, 24 May 2011 (CEST)
So we're the UN. Sounds good to me. Sanfazer 17:30, 24 May 2011 (CEST)

I'm with pretty much everyone else. This sounds like a great idea. More traffic, cross-linking, and basically an exclusivity contract. And no Wikia! (because the word itself still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth after our early dealings with them (hint: stolen content!)) --Buddy 08:32, 28 May 2011 (CEST)

When I took over Futurama Wiki, I made a point not to steal content from here. However, I now 100% hate Wikia and I want to destroy them. If others also seem to dislike the idea of Wikia wikis joining, then no Wikia wikis will join.
If everyone seems to like the idea, we would need someone to host a hub site similar to NIWA. Alternatively, we could make a wiki hub and get editing limited to admins who would the the hub staff and a forum on it too (ShoutWiki has got a new WikiForum extension). This would be the alternative if no one can host and design a site. 92.20.137.92 20:49, 29 May 2011 (CEST)

Are all IPs the same person? I'm getting confused. Please consider creating a user. - akitalk 08:30, 30 May 2011 (CEST)

Sorry, wasn't logged in. Thought I was. Solar the Dragon 09:50, 30 May 2011 (CEST)

Hey, I'm Will k! And, if anything, I'm Solar the Dragon's business associate on the Animated Sitcom Wiki Alliance (we're both heading it). I'm also the same person he was talking about working on Bob's Burgers and American Dad!, although the latter I'm not particularly doing much. Although I'm sure we'd all love for it to be an independent alliance, there's always the issue with money, so it may just be a normal wiki alliance, and as for the concern of more than one wiki on the same topic, agreed with Solar, there will only ever be one on a topic, and it WILL NOT be replaced, I do not think, unless under extreme circumstances. Will k 14:12, 31 May 2011 (CEST)

I think all Infosphericans agree that nothing bad can come from this, only good publicity, and so we agree that we're on it. At least that's my impression. Should we have some vote for all users or something of the like? - akitalk 14:16, 31 May 2011 (CEST)

Well, if you guys are in, we need to start thinking up the rules for joining and drawing up how we're going to be doing this, a hub site or hub wiki, who will host etc. Solar the Dragon 14:19, 31 May 2011 (CEST)
As I said we have to decide if we want first. Lots of users don't look at this page, and I think everyone, not only admins, should weigh in on it. When we have given thumbs up, then we'll talk details. - akitalk 14:25, 31 May 2011 (CEST)
I think so. The ballot box is now in place. Sanfazer 19:18, 31 May 2011 (CEST)
While I have not participated in this discussion, I have paid attention to it and think an alliance of The Infosphere, Wikisimpsons, and other animated sitcoms is a good idea. My two favorite shows and wikis in one place! -- DeepSpaceHomer 19:43, 31 May 2011 (CEST)
I agree that most people don't see this area of the site (I barely see it myself unless I seek it out, which I often forget to do), so perhaps a news item on the front page? Or even one of those page header notifications? Is there a way to only make that show up for registered users? IP's don't get to vote! ;-) That way, even casual users are likely to be aware of it and vote. --Buddy 22:49, 31 May 2011 (CEST)
I would think a general header banner (on all pages) with a link to this discussion/poll is the best way to go. The top time of having it up would be about a week, to make sure even those who only drop in once in a while see it. - akitalk 23:08, 31 May 2011 (CEST)
You can manipulate the sitenotice to only show for registered users. You just need to change MediaWiki:Anonnotice to something too. Solar the Dragon 00:45, 1 June 2011 (CEST)
This would be good promotion. Joining the alliance (if it's the right one) is definitely beneficial. I say, we take the seat before Wikia does *shiver* --Trickymaster 02:42, 1 June 2011 (CEST)
I selected The Infosphere as a founding member of the alliance as they are 1. Not Wikia. 2. Are affiliated with us. 3. The best Futurama wiki I can find. :) Solar the Dragon 10:32, 1 June 2011 (CEST)
Tried it. Didn't seem to change anything. Sanfazer 22:39, 1 June 2011 (CEST)
Created MediaWiki:Sitenotice. That will probably do. Sanfazer 22:44, 1 June 2011 (CEST)
That sounded very reckless. And I'm feeling kind of stupid too. I've just realised Anon is short for Anonymous. This, and me being logged in, will explain why nothing changed. Anyway, one week to go!
Solar, it appears to be working the way it is. Sanfazer 23:19, 1 June 2011 (CEST)
Problem is, anons can still see this, which is why I suggested changing the Anonnotice. Solar the Dragon 23:48, 3 June 2011 (CEST)
I know. (Damn them to hell!) What exactly needs to be changed? Sanfazer 01:14, 4 June 2011 (CEST)
I would suggest changing the anonnotice to something like "Sign up an account", linking to the create account page. Solar the Dragon 15:28, 4 June 2011 (CEST)
Would changing it to

serve the same purpose? Sanfazer 19:20, 4 June 2011 (CEST)
I have no idea, you could try. Solar the Dragon 11:07, 6 June 2011 (CEST)

So, anyone else voting? Solar the Dragon 23:20, 13 June 2011 (CEST)

We should have had a deadline planned ahead. It's been ten days, what if we go for a fortnight and end it on June 17 (this Friday)? - akitalk 23:23, 13 June 2011 (CEST)
Seems unanimous anyway. I doubt there would be enough voters in four days to tip the scales, so I say we just go for it. IMHO --Buddy 00:44, 14 June 2011 (CEST)
It sounds undemocratic to me to suddenly end a votation when we know what side will win, when no deadline was predetermined. But then again no-one ever claimed the Infosphere was a democracy. Ending it is fine by me. - akitalk 00:47, 14 June 2011 (CEST)

I think that the only members should be INDEPENDENT wikis of the Animation Domination sitcoms. This means no Shoutwiki or Wikia tied ones. The shows that I think should also be part of the alliance the Adult Swim ones (I know VGod, the Devil and Bob was acquired, but still) and the Comedy Central ones. I don't feel that Cartoon Network ones like Johnny Bravo and 6teen would really be comfortable. Those are more kids-geared, while the ones I want to include are late teen and adult-geared--Icyweaner2999 23:27, 17 June 2011 (CEST)

So not The Simpsons? - akitalk 23:28, 17 June 2011 (CEST)
The Simpsons will have a reserved spot. It needs a completely independent wiki first--Icyweaner2999 00:41, 18 June 2011 (CEST)
If there are to be some exceptions, I don't see the point of having a radar like "Adult Swim and Comedy Central only" to begin with. - akitalk 00:48, 18 June 2011 (CEST)
It's not just Adult Swim and Comedy Central. It's also Animation Domination. That would be the initial radar--Icyweaner2999 01:01, 18 June 2011 (CEST)
"The shows that I think should also be part of the alliance the Adult Swim ones [...] and the Comedy Central ones" are your words. I disagreed. - akitalk 01:04, 18 June 2011 (CEST)
The first thing I said was "I think that the only members should be INDEPENDENT wikis of the Animation Domination sitcoms."
By the way, welcome back to the Infosphere after your one and a half hiatus! :D - akitalk 00:51, 18 June 2011 (CEST)
Thanks. I was helping to shape Family Guy wiki. It's literally in autocracy over there. I proved the one admin right on something and he blocks me. He was literally limiting me to edit no pages, as he told me not to edit "pages already edited. He somehow hated me for stalking the RecentChanges and fixing others' mistakes--Icyweaner2999 01:01, 18 June 2011 (CEST)
Aw, not nice. :( Well, you're more than welcome here. - akitalk 01:04, 18 June 2011 (CEST)
I'm Jack's Posse Fic over there. Go check out my contributions and tell me if I was doing anything wrong--Icyweaner2999 01:12, 18 June 2011 (CEST)
Oh, and unless I've missed something, Johnny Bravo isn't really a sitcom. - akitalk 23:30, 17 June 2011 (CEST)
If we are going for Animated Sitcoms, it should have to include all animated sitcoms. Also, There are very few independent wikis based on Animated sitcoms and a couple on ShoutWiki (still no Wikia wikis, I hate Wikia). Solar the Dragon 23:31, 17 June 2011 (CEST)

I'm happy to officialise that The Infosphere has decided to become a founding member of the Animated Sitcom Wiki Alliance. It's been three weeks since the voting started and I think there is no doubt as to what The Infospherians want. Long live the ASWA! Sanfazer 00:04, 30 June 2011 (CEST)

I have a hosting account set up to host my website, it would be very easy and fairly inexpensive to add a second domain/site (the hub) to my hosting account. Just throwing that out there. I am KETCHUP! King of the condiments! 05:19, 1 July 2011 (CEST)

Ketchup, that would be great. Also, we welcome anyone to come to our IRC channel, irc://irc.shoutwiki.com/wikisimpsons or via WebChat to discuss things further. If we get a basic hub set up, we can start discussing things in a more neutral location, rather than on The Infosphere or Wikisimpsons. 92.20.131.185 11:55, 5 July 2011 (CEST)
Whoops, wasn't logged in, that was me. Solar the Dragon 11:57, 5 July 2011 (CEST)
I got it so the irc channel opens when I start my client. Should see you in there eventually so we can discuss things further. I am KETCHUP! King of the condiments! 10:18, 6 July 2011 (CEST)

The Animated Sitcom Wiki Alliance is being set up! Please discuss the setting up of it on it's forums. Solar the Dragon 00:06, 28 July 2011 (CEST)

You are also now an official founding member of the Animated Sitcom Wiki Alliance! I'm thinking of making a somewhat badge, for founding members (those being ones that join between now and official launch). --Will k (Talk) 13:21, 28 July 2011 (CEST)
