Strange you mention this issue, cause I don't think your "fix" is that great. Because the size also depends on users' font size, typeface and what not. But I never have the issue of the page being stretched or cut off in Minefield (Firefox 3.0), but I think it should easily be fixed with styles rather your current solution. I mean, it is just a list.
