Troop Grit is the sixty-first comic issue, released 30 May, 2012 in the US.

The Story

Act I

After accidentally killing the original leader, Bender takes over as troop leader for a trio of robotic scouts. A mutant girl tries to join the troop and Bender claims his group is for robots only, Leela overhears and decides to start a group for mutants. Fry is jealous, but can't find anyone to join his group, so he decides to be a troop on his own. The crew argue over which troop is best, so Hermes sends the troops on a field trip/delivery

Act II

The groups have a series of contests and are tied when a volcano erupts. The planet is revealed to be a living planet and the delivery is medicine, without which it is going through various climate changes. After successfully medicating the planet, the troops decide to merge and the planet is recruited as a new member. Fry volunteers to make a troop forming badge for the planet, not realising that the badge would be the size of the Planet Express building.

Quotes

Fry: Fine! I'll just start my own troop with just me in it! I'll call it... The Fry Scouts!
Professor: That's the saddest thing I've ever seen. And I'm best friends with Zoidberg.
Zoidberg: Hooray! Zoidberg isn't the most pathetic staff member anymore!

    Bender: Destroy all humans!
Amy: Ugh! Why did you pick that motto for your bot scout troop, Bender?
Bender: We tried, "Maim all humans," but it just didn't have the same sizzle!

Fry: Surprise, Amy! I did your laundry and put everything back in your closet!
Amy: Oh no! I arrange things from cute to smoking. You put a sexy skirt right next to an adorable top! AAAAGH! This will take hours to fix!

Hermes: Hmmmmm... Time to use an old conflict resolution technique I learned at camp!
[Hermes pulls out a taser and zaps Fry, Leela and Bender.]
    Fry, Leela and Bender: AAAAAAAH!
Amy: You learned that in the scouts?
[Hermes shows Amy a badge on the inside of his jacket.]
Hermes: Still got my tasering badge!

Continuity

Allusions

  • Leela's scout troop names themselves "The Sisterhood of Evil Mutants" in reference to X-Men enemies "The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants". Also in reference to X-Men, Fry is seen using Cerebro to attempt to recruit scouts for his troop.
  • During Fry's flashback, Yancy is watching ALF.
  • The crew get lost and ask the cast of Lost in Space for directions.
  • Fry is seen on a fake cover of SAD magazine, a publication that resembles MAD magazine.
  • Leela's troop puts on a performance of the musical Wicked.

Goofs

  • When exiting the ship on the planet, Bungalow-Bot's lower body is not drawn below Leela's ponytail.
