Gary is a banking industry regulator who went out with Amy, while Fry's head was still attached to her body. Fry too tried to go out on a date with Petunia, but it failed when she realised that Fry had no body. Gary meanwhile was very interested in dating Amy, much to Fry's dismay, as he was not at all interested in being a third wheel while they got home for "coffee".
Fortunately for Fry, Leela was nearby and as Gary and Amy was heading out, Leela asked what Gary did for a living. Which was banking industry regulation. When Leela suggested that the field was very simple, Gary denied it, explaining that modern banking regulations are a product of five different regulation traditions, six if you want to get technical. Gary went on to explain the entire tale for Leela, dating back to 1410. The long talk resulted in Amy and Gary never getting back home, much to Amy's discontent and Fry's relief.
