Josh Gedgie was an evil nerd who stole Philip J. Fry's idea of using the common cold virus for an entry to win the Nerd Search '88 Science Competition, which he ultimately won (6ACV24). Despite being Fry's main rival at the competition, Fry would eventually be glad that it was Gedgie's experiment and not his that won the competition, as his experiment contained a sample of the virus that would lead to the creation of a vaccine for the common cold after it was reintroduced in the year 3011.
It is revealed in "Quids Game" that Gedgie and Fry were formally close friends, as the former attended Fry's eighth birthday party in 1982. However, he stormed out of the party with the other guests when he believed Fry was cheating at the games (said games being rigged by Fry's parents, unbeknownst to Fry himself). It is assumed this is what began Fry and Gedgie's adversarial relationship.
