Kirk is an orphan that grew up with Leela at Cookieville Minimum-Security Orphanarium. Even though he was blind, he still made fun of Leela's one eye. Sometime before the events of "The Cyber House Rules", he became deaf. Yet, he was able to recognise Leela at the Orphanarium's party.
