The Chi (or Chee) is a green, universal, life-giving tide that originated from the Black Dwarf System, eons ago. The Chi spread throughout the universe, allowing living animals and plants to form DNA. Later, the Chi receded and only the toughest of species could survive, such as Humans and the Dark Ones. Many others went extinct. In 3009, for reasons unknown, the Chi came back, and awoke the last Encyclopod egg. The Encyclopod that hatched from it ended the Arms Race of Evolution and brought all the extinct species back.

A cult of mind-readers, called the Legion of Mad Fellows predicted the Chi's power, and protected the Encyclopod egg from being destroyed.
