An alien species of space alligators lives on the Moon. (Although they could be normal alligators to whom unknown alligator farmers have added the helmets they need to survive.) They dwell within the Moon's many valleys and, like alligators on Earth, are very territorial. The helmets prevent them from actually harming anyone.
