Umbriel is a mermaid who lives in the lost city of Atlanta with her father The Colonel.

Biography

Umbriel grew up in Atlanta as the daughter of a rich colonel. She was spotted by Fry in 3001 while he was looking for food with Zoidberg and Bender, but everyone else thought he imagined her as a result of ocean madness. She then appeared and brought Fry outside at night where they did things together, like watching animals fight, and eventually they fell in love. She brought Fry to Atlanta and was followed by the rest of the crew where Fry decided he would live with her. Fry finally left when he found out how mermaids reproduce. Umbriel then had to find someone else to escort her to the Debutante Ball.

Family

Production

Umbriel's character was named as a reference to the famous mermaid Ariel from The Little Mermaid - Ariel and Umbriel are both moons of Uranus, which are in turn named after characters from "The Rape of the Lock" by Alexander Pope.

Additional Info

Trivia

  • Umbriel does not appear in a scene in "The Sting" (which includes most of Fry's ex girlfriends at his funeral), nor does she appear in the ending of Into the Wild Green Yonder.
    • This is obviously because she cannot breathe above water.

Quotes

    Umbriel: Here you go, darlin'.
    [Fry breathes.]
Fry: Hey! I can breath and talk, just like a fish!
    Umbriel: Oh, you speak fish?
    [She says something in fish.]
    Fry: What?
Umbriel: I'm sorry, my accent's atrocious. Hi, my name's Umbriel!
